Well under $500 your not going to get much out of a laptop, maybe with a desktop there will be more usability but under $500 u cant do much gaming. A decent videocard is at least $250-$300

this is the closest your going to get.

you can get a good computer under 500 USD.  if  you build it yourself.  a graphics card is decent thats 100 USD. Mine can play any game out there with 1280x1024.  I only paid 90 USD for it. anyway, you can build one for 300 USD (dual core) and get a 200 USD graphics cards.

1280 x 1024 is a low res though, most mid gpu's are expected to just play 1680 x 1050

for 500 dollars you're not going to get much out of it especially if you want a laptop...If you want a good gaming laptop save up at least 1500 and get an alienware..If you want a good gaming desktop though you save up like 200 more and build your own, i could help you build it if you want.

you cant really rebuild and make a laptop better.

Also, for $500 i wouldnt call it Gaming, Multimedia at most, more likely workstation.

my monitor can't support anything higher.  my card can go much higher but I'd need a bigger monitor. my graphics card can easily support 1680x1050 no problem but I would need like a 22 or a 24 inch monitor

If you do get a laptop that you want to mod to make better, pretty much the only mod you can really do is changing the ram, from like 512mb to 2gb

Hard Drive wouldnt make it better as such, cant change the built in DVD Drive, Or the Screen, you can get an expansion WiFi Card, but thats like plugging in a USB Stick.
