video card
the 8800gt is a must if your not ati person and don't want to spend alot for a gtx and it is better than gts and you can overclock it if you use a plethora of apps

CPU
i like the E21xx its in my opinion the best overclock cpu it clock stock at 1.6-1.8ghz and you can easily overclock it to 3ghz or higher with stock fan

Case
any case you like i like full towers as they are big and have lots of room
-
I'd go for an AMD/ATi Mix, New Phenom CPU, New AM2+ Mobo, And Maybe a 3870 GPu

I love the pentium series but they are stupid to get it with a 8800. If I was drunk I would say what he said.
-
not drunk anymore just dont have time to go looking - doesnt matter where the parts are from preferably UK but i can try to get from other countries. links would be great and thanks i will check the links given later on

The Phenom Dual cores arent out yet, but i'll put a few links together with a Quad
CPU (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=712425)
Graphics (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=722241)
Mobo (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=713203)
RAM (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=585716)
OS and Large App/Games HDD (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=410986)
General HDD x2 (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=530765)
Monitor (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=604046)
Then i would put Vista ontop of that.
The GPU will easily run at that monitors max res, so its a safe bet (will give you an extra year or 2 max settings)
-
it will probably be plugged into a 30" apple monitor or a HD TV if i was to get it i just want to see what is possible so i can think to save up - as my last computer cost £3000 about 7 years ago
-
thats like £800 then, and it will run on a 750W aslong as it has all the right connections.
a 30" Apple Cinema would be great, although i wouldnt want to plug it into an HDTV.
-
i think its a thermaltake one with plug and play connectors
-
Should be fine, worth searching the model # though

im a bit new to the computer stuff (in the middle of my own build) but why would you buy a 1.6-1.8ghz processor and over clock it when you could go out and buy one that runs stock at 3ghz or higher?
is there some benefit of doing it one way over the other?

its cheaper and its preforms aswell as a core 2 duo but if you want to spend more i go ahead but make sure you don't get a old pentium that says 3.2 but is old tech
-
i was just wondering.
i went with this

yeh my old pc that im wanting to replace had a 3ghz P4 chip in it with 3gb ram yadayadayada
-
I would still go with the AMD, its the newest, it runs cooler, so your PC will be quiter, and it will OC Better.
And AMD Own ATi, so there are programs made by them that run great on the 2.

Yeah, i agree with Matt
But i prefer ATi gpus to nvidia gpus
Nvidia charges double as much as ATi, and i heard the new 3870 is slightly better than the 8800 Ultra and the 3870 is half the price
Also, with that new thing that they are doing where you can have 4 gpus, imagine 4 3870's in there, then 2 phenom cpus
i can only dream, but i think u robin can actually by a computer like that with a bit more money
-
4 Gpu's would not be supported by games, SLi and Crossfire are patchy at best...
