Title: Flash Carts
Post by: jair2k4 on December 28, 2007, 09:36:18 PM
Ok, I'm a psp guy, most people know that. But ive been getting frustrated with the mods i am working on and decided to go for a change of pace. So I just bought a ds lite and am trying to figure out the best way to play vids and music on it. So I thought of a flash cart.

Can anyone give me some info on a good one to get, what kind of homebrew and backups they play (.nds?) and anything else i might need to know?

thanks.

Go with the M3 Simply or R4DS

There is absolutely no difference between the two except the sticker on the front

both are the same price, have the same menu and do the same things

don't let anyone tell you otherwise

just pick one out of a hat :D

They use micro-sd cards for storage and are the best in terms of performance - price ratio

after that i'd go for the M3 Real cos its the same but supports Micro SDHC

or if you want a NAND flash one go for the G6 Real which has 2GB Space and is a reasonable price unlike the DS-X whch is the same and has buggy firmware

Hope that helps...

That helped a lot, thanks!

I ended up going with the DS fire cart, as all of the reviews i could find said that it was a great one for the price. I really dont want to mess with micro SD, I want to have as few parts as possible, and the fire is 2g NAND. Plus, since i was ordering psp cases off DX anyway, i got a better (free) deal on the shipping.

yeah iv always been a NAND dude myself as well

the one real perk the DS-Xtreme has is the way it lists JUST the applications so you don't have to go fiddling about with directories to keep things organised when you just wanna pick a game

thats why id get one if i could afford it, plus teh led's are cool

Question: nds files.... emulation or running them like a true game from a cart? I've never figured out how that works.

it like running the game, its not emulated

and of course because you do things 100% legal these are NOT downloaded roms but your own legal dumps

Ehh sorry to say but R4 > M3, and I have an M3, only true difference is that the R4 gets updated alot more. G6 is like the best of the best though.

I have an R4DS it does the same thing as all other flash carts EXCEPT it Typo***(can)can't use SDHC(4gb+ sd's).
I would say cyclo ds is  :#1: because it can use SDHC, it is updated much more frequently, the staff is very responsive.

I'm pretty sure the R4 can't use SDHC cards.Up to 4GB max, but only non SDHC cards (which I've never seen personally).

yep,the r4 cant use SDHC.but it is still a very good cart that doesnt have much game corruption.

True, but the M3 Real DOES support SDHC (upto 8Gb). I was planning to get that but can't with the price. If anything, go for that if you want to hold upto 8Gb and not have to switch chips around like I did, using 2 Gb for music and vids, the other for games, and I'd have to switch em' around each time if I wanted to do either task, which was a pain in the arse after a while.

If you're looking for carts with the most features to date, and not concerned about price, the top three right now are Acekard 2, DS One, and CycloDS Evolution.

R4 is a familiar brand for pretty much everyone, but it is obsolete as of now.

Sorry if I brought up a dead topic, but I was wondering what the updates were about?

I want a flash card that will run my legal dumps, support a 2gb microSD, and is cheap with the least amount of bugs. I don't care if it has dirctories or not, it just has to have those main points. Thanks.

in my opinion the dstt is fine. its cheap and does exactly what you want.
on dx its like 35 at most and that comes with a 2gb

I know I`m going to get an M3, but should I get the Real or Simply? I found a good deal, $50 for a Real with 1GB card, card reader/writer, case, and rumblepack.

the dstt looks good, for what I would need anyways. and its only 20$ on DX :fear:

dstt is good but make sure you have a fast memory card. i bought their package which bundled it with a 2gb sandisk (fake) and it takes a few seconds to load up the game. i also bought a dstt and then bought a kingston (original in local shop) and it loads alot more faster. it might not be that important but its is to me. it has absolutly no ingame lag tho

If a few seconds is like 2-3 I'm ok with that but if it is more like 10 then I'm gonna need to buy some new memory!

You might as well get the simple mate. Basically, the real is meant for people who like the simply but need a memory upgrade, since that one can use HC cards (4GB,8GB). It's quality is a bit less compared to the simply, but still good, but since you;re going with a 2GB, the simply is one of the best IMO.

But the proformence is the same, right? Also, does anyone know any good deals for the simply that include both a reader/writer and a 1GB or higher card for 50 or less. If not, I'm going with the Real.

Personally, I had been thinking of going with CycloDS.  I hear it's the best as on now.  Would anyone recommend it or no, still R4 and M3?

It's safe to say CycloDS is the best. It is about $50, but is worth every cent.

Here's a list of features:

- DLDI-patching, and excellent ROM compatibility
- Built-in cheats for ROMs
- Slow-Motion, Realtime Save and Load (whenever you want), in-game text reader for ROMs
- Soft reset for ROMs and homebrew
- Supports GBA ROM booting directly from the file browser (to an EZ Flash 3-in-1)
- Serves as a PassMe (probably don't need that though)
- Supports SDHC

Not to mention it's incredibly easy to use, and the support community is great. And if you have any questions about it or homebrew, you can ask me.

The carts no one seems to have mentioned are the Acekard RPG and the Acekard 2.  At $11.98 (no shipping or tax!), I favor the latter.  I thought seriously about the CycloDS, but cheapness and a more malleable GUI won out.  All three cards do far more and are faster than the R4.

Here's what I use:

Acekard 2:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.16142

A-DATA 8GB micro SDHC class 6:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211342

For GBA, etc., EZFlash 3-in-1:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.2967

You'll still need a USB card reader.  The one that comes with any Acekard is awful. Mine is by Kensington and is completely problem-free; I'll check the model number if anyone needs to know.

For other suggestions and information, this is the best forum I've found so far:

http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showforum=40

All of the devs post there, and you can find reviews of nearly every cart available (even Cyclo's new one for the supposedly hack-proof DSi).  One rule to follow:  Don't post asking for links to free ROMs. You can ask questions about using one with a specific cart, but not where to actually find them.

We appreciate the information but please check the dates before you post.  If it's more then a month old please don't bump it.
