is this an external or internal and is it always on. usually hdds come with installation cds like what you talk about if you think you can replace everything that was mosssing just do that but i would suggest uninstalling the program then reinstalling. if its internal no ideas.

its internal and the disc your talking about is usally to install the fat32 driver which most external hdd are formated as but since i have win xp it automatically detects it with out the use of any disc

hmm, it is correctly connected with the cables right? if it still doesnt, it could be a defect in the cable

can you access it all on your com. i know theyre are prgrams that can scan and get into any of those things. Uninstall and reinstall all the software for the drive. did you try it on another com? if worse comes to worse format it or bring it into a comp shop they can usually figure things out.

How old is this hard drive? Based on everything you've said, and assuming you've tried all the suggestions in this topic, my guess is going to be that the controller board on the hard drive has died, especially if that drive is older than 3 years. Though it's highly unlikely since device manager doesn't see it, check in computer management (control panel, administrative tools, computer management, disk management).

Dying controller boards is simply something that happens with hard drives! This is also why it's important to keep redundancy on all of your data.

There are a few things you can try, which all depend on how important the data on that drive is. The first, which I'd certainly try is the freezer trick. Put the hard drive into two ziplock freezer bags and put it in the freezer for a few hours, overnight is best. Take the drive out of the freezer, pop it back into the computer, and you have a short time to rescue any important data.

If your data is really important, check out this:

The guy explains lots of methods for in home hard drive recovery. I doubt you have anything worth sending out to a professional service on that drive.

Good luck!

Wow...some odd suggestions...:P
Try this. while its hooked up. as you think it should be....right click 'my computer' and go to Manage. You should see "Disk Management" Click that and should see your disks. Find the one thats greyed out, right click on it and go to active or make a partition or something like that, I cant remember. Im pretty sure its 'new partition'. Leave it at the default size and format NTFS.
Should work fine. I have to do that everytime I add a HDD, external or internal. SATA and IDE. If that doesnt work, IM me.
