Its probably the pins, I would open it up and take the pins off the mother board and use a cotton swab with alcohol and some air in a can to clean them.  If that does not work then it would be that the cartridge is not going down all the way and making full contact.  This can be fixed by taking the cartridge mechanism off the mother board and using needle nose pliers to bend the little metal peice that keeps the cartridge down towards you so that it closes tighter, this may take some fine tuning to get it to go up and down just right.

I have done this multiple times and it should work.

Red Flashing either means:
Cart is wrong region
no cart is inserted
Cart is not making proper contact.

There was also a problem where the chip that checks if the Cardridge was licensed died, there was a fix for that, let me look it up real quick.

Its most likely that the pins aren't making proper contact anymore. It's quite easy to fix, just open up the nes, remove the cart slot and bend the contacts a bit with a pin of something.

The problem is caused by the design of the slot, through time, the pins bend away from their original position. If you do not wish to spend the time doing this, you can buy now connectors online some place.

I should do this to mine, even though I dont use it anymore. When I used to play it, I would just give it a few good hits and it would work :p

If you don't want to spend money and w8 for a new connector to come grab a soft toothbrush and with alcohol rub the pins and contacts and be carefull not to bend anything. That damn works for my 4 NES's and if it's your cartridge open your cartridge and rub the contacts with an eraser. These are the best ways to clean and maintain retro hardware.
