Title: 30 gauge wire, easy to break?
Post by: cwn723 on February 23, 2008, 07:02:53 PM
hello, i am currently attempting to do the sound mod, and when i solder the wires onto the ic, it seems like the wires are super easy to break. it isnt breaking at the solder point, but where i have a little wire showing before it gets from the solder point to the insulated part. is it just that the wire is super easy to break, or did i do sumthing wrong? :eyebrow:

30 guage is very thin and is :censored:ile do not flex the wire once soldered. Mabe you could try tining the wire right to the insulation or adding some electrical tape or sumfing  :dntknw:

i have tined the wire, and put on some electrical tape. i think it is just that it is super fragile. also, ive experimented, and it seems that if you have insultation right up to the soulder, it wont break. so... i guess thats that.

after i did my mod one of the wires broke, I think if you heat it up too much it becomes more brittle

I just tin the pin or wherever i'm soldering to and then melt the insulation on top of the solder point allowing the wire to bond and melt insulant at the same time

you can melt the insulation without ruining your iron?

I dont think your iron is gonna be ruined, just clean it after melting insulation.
Btw 0603 leds and kynar is sometimes a pain in the ass to solder with. :boxed:
Anyone tips for more easy soldering?

it shouldnt be easy to break...
its probably your wire stripping technique...

your probably slicing the wire slightly causing the breaking problem...

the wires i use are good quality and never really break (even with lots of bending)

or.... mebbe you have some messed up wire?

i have radioshack wire, so it should be good quality.  it only breaks where there is no insulation, i have the problem mostly figured out anyway. thanks for the help.

and on psp_nl, try using something to hold the led down, it makes it much easier.
