Title: Slim internal microphone **more pictures and better explanation**
Post by: Maximize on May 03, 2008, 02:49:27 PM
okay so I have gotten tired of the buggy phat analog, and have moved on to modding a slim

I put a mic into my slim

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi168.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu200%2FCHarper1980%2FDSC00001.jpg&hash=4465db26dbca62dc7f36907f35e073f77c650760)

it came from this LG phone

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi168.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu200%2FCHarper1980%2FDSC00008.jpg&hash=687089df5156b327211f0b18a38ec24f247eeb31)

and a view of how small it is (under 3mm)

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi168.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu200%2FCHarper1980%2FDSC00005.jpg&hash=d027df5bd50a916da247f43c52f283a9a2b13d5f)

ground down this little nub and glued the mic in its place, ran the wires in the path shown

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi168.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu200%2FCHarper1980%2FDSC00013.jpg&hash=b1050f8b6f152cdd54ca246c003299bf14294e49)

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi168.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu200%2FCHarper1980%2FDSC00013-1.jpg&hash=986525c5384b3bb85ddf3aa86af44fddaf6cbcc8)

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi168.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu200%2FCHarper1980%2FDSC00012-1.jpg&hash=a5e08a6d43c8b67151936e9ad9e4d33ed6e61437)

ground down these two little protrusions and trimmed down the parts of the circle and removed the tiny nub

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi168.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu200%2FCHarper1980%2FDSC00012.jpg&hash=413b374f18a91454bcd1514e19153eb668e9ab4f)

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi168.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu200%2FCHarper1980%2FDSC00015.jpg&hash=14c061c75426dd130097195e0185aa89de37f591)

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi168.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu200%2FCHarper1980%2FDSC00016.jpg&hash=5b9fec41009a6492e20bf3403a4b044a01cc0252)

the light blue arrows, point to the circle trimming, and dark blue is the nub removed

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi168.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu200%2FCHarper1980%2FDSC00014-1.jpg&hash=b3907333605c123631f1e300365debbf8dd863b6)

made the hole larger for the mic to stick through

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi168.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu200%2FCHarper1980%2FDSC00017.jpg&hash=6a6c0fa226a73e010147bc33f9845c7b40f5fce8)

then over to the a/v daughterboard

these are the solder points the view is from the bottom of the psp with the headphone jack is the circle on the left and the left arrow is the input, making right be ground

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi168.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu200%2FCHarper1980%2Fpsp.jpg&hash=7ecb02d1ca6ea9305012d205b5c38d7fbaacf86c)

you can see that the bottom pins are the top in this view (where the red arrow points) and the top pins are recesssed behind (where the green arrow points).

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi168.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu200%2FCHarper1980%2FDSC00023-1.jpg&hash=5b33236afe7eab83755a98969008f7e9c24dfd11)

So I lifted the inner 3 top pins soldered the 2 wires in and resoldered the 3 pins back in place.

video using arts audio mechanica so you can see it and hear a recording

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi168.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu200%2FCHarper1980%2Fth_MOV00024.jpg&hash=ddb449c850aacbe08bbc9a8b57228e0dbed9bb41) (http://s168.photobucket.com/albums/u200/CHarper1980/?action=view&current=MOV00024.flv)

I used the loco roco plugin like from my other internal mic (phat) psp

http://dl.qj.net/LocoRoco-Motion-Plugin-v0.99-PSP-Homebrew-Applications/pg/12/fid/15500/catid/151 (http://dl.qj.net/LocoRoco-Motion-Plugin-v0.99-PSP-Homebrew-Applications/pg/12/fid/15500/catid/151)

you can add the plugin to the game.txt, and vsh.txt to enable it in homebrew, games, and the XMB
this basically enables the serial port with out a headphone jack in place, but it is not necessary if you intend to use headphones

Ahh ok thanks, I tried that pinout before I found this thread. When it didn't work with skype I assumed I had it wrong somehow.
After testing I see the mic is working fine in Audio Mechanica, it's just not being detected by skype :[

I'm guessing Skype requires communication on the remote detect pin before enabling audio input. Might have to sacrifice an official headset unless anyone has another idea. I'd rather not spend $30 on a headset just for the ic. Back to google

try the loco roco motion plugin found at qj.net and listed in my other internal microphone (phat) thread

it should turn on the serial port with out the need for a headphone jack

it works on mine

and this will make skype work??? this is why i did this mod can i just run the resistor to the groud for the detect and if so will that cut something else off??? i guess i could just try this if you have let me now... that plugin isnt doing what i was expecting i dont even know what its doing at all hahaha
Title: Re: Slim internal microphone
Post by: Maximize on May 11, 2008, 01:11:20 PM
yeah I don't know about any resistors.  wire in the mic.  then put the plugin in the seplugins folder, add the plugins to game.txt  so you can use the mic for online games or homebrew, add it to vsh.txt so it will work in XMB (skype).  if a headphone jack is in use the plugin will bypass it.

[This post has been edited because of Maximize's edit to the first post and alexandercyle's reply below]

I'm doing this mod, after poking around with a multimeter I found these solder points for anybody who doesn't want to desolder and resolder the connector pins. The left wire is ground, the right wire is input. If your having troubles soldering the wire to the resistor (like I was), then scratch the solder mask off of the trace to expose bare copper and solder to that instead.

......yeah that waill work i dont  know about the left wire as far as it getting in the way but the positive one is right ......and to my reply ok well i got as far as implimenting the plugin to the seplugin folder but when i load say socom it says motion sensor not detected or something like that and i dont even now how to put the plugin in the vsh. file it registers the plugin in recovery and i assume it is in use sence the message with socom. i really have had a lot of trouble lately taking the dam thing apart its like writers block or something i just want the mic to work for socom ad/or skype i dont have any homebrew stuff that uses a mic and if you now of something that might get my intrests off this then tell me sounds like it would be easier than dealing with the problems hahahahaha thanks though i will try the resistor thing when i feel like getting mad at the psp for not going my way lol...oh have you tried this with socom or is there any other games i would be able to talk on online i think hats the biggest thing
Title: Re: Slim internal microphone
Post by: Maximize on May 12, 2008, 04:05:45 AM
I have not tried socom myself but in killzone, and every other time it says motion kit not detected terminating, but the mic still works
Title: Re: Slim internal microphone
Post by: alexandercyle on May 12, 2008, 11:20:08 AM
then i will try killzone thanks

Loaded the plugin, enabled it for VSH and GAME in the recovery menu, doesn't seem to work with skype. Thanks for trying, Maximize, have you confirmed that yours is working w/ skype. I realize it might be a pain to test if you don't have an account or contacts, just wondering.
Title: Re: Slim internal microphone
Post by: Maximize on May 12, 2008, 03:51:06 PM
okay it doesn't work with skype, it must require the ic from the remote, well it does work with furikup
Title: Re: Slim internal microphone **more pictures and better explanation**
Post by: alexandercyle on May 12, 2008, 11:33:11 PM
yeah i dont think it works w/ skype must need that 42k resistor but i did get it to work with killzone i didnt know hw to activae the mic when i did it was by accident i was like this stupid mic the other people were like wtf is your problem then i was like i am trying to get this internal mic to work then i was the master hahaha thanks im going to try to run the resistor thing so you dont have to run the plugin and it will work on skype it needs the remote to work on skype or atleast the resistor to say its there...sweet mod though dont know if the socom prob is cause mine is a cso and its just not loading fast enough and then hanging up somehow any opinionn on a good cso to iso converter???

tried socom 2 not working
tried talkman working
tried audio technica working

notice that i have to put the mic really near my mouth in order to make a clear word. thinks you need a amp chip.

i think it was just the mic you used i got mine out of just a corded handsfree samsung headset the kind with the little box on the wire that has a little whole for the mic and it picks up real good. try changing the mic you only have to take off the front case not to bad to change stuff around

Title: Re: Slim internal microphone **more pictures and better explanation**
Post by: Maximize on May 14, 2008, 04:54:49 PM
it all depends on the operating voltage range of the mic.  I think resistance matters as well.  I considered a preamp with my first mic, but it made sense to try another mic

this is awesome nice job  im going to end up doing/trying this regardless (and the external wifi antenna) but i haven't yet voided my warenty so im a little scared to open up my beautiful psp (A LITTLE lol) so i have a mic to try but im still not sure exactly which points im supposed to solder it to? i know yall have pictures and ive read all of the thread but i guess i wont know for sure until i open up my baby  :sadno:. grrr i forgot to get a screwdriver aslo! could it be possible to open it up with one of those eyeglasses repair tools?

haha well i just realized once i mod my psp the warrenty sticker wont even matter. not like sony will even check for a warranty sticker once they see the mic and antenna lol. actually i bet if i didn't mess up my sticker though they would replace it just so i had a regular psp again lol.

Post by: babyboi828 on May 15, 2008, 09:31:38 PM
lmao actually i did just do it  lol well took  everything apart at least and broke a coupla cellphones...umm is there a way to see if my mic works before i put it in my psp? cause its from an old ass motorola and im not sure if i soldered these two wires correctly, well i guess cause putting it in would prolly be the best way to test it buuuut.... im still not sure what to solder the mic to (sry) lol im trying to go by iam7805's pic but i cant really tell wich resistor that right wire is connecting to...the left wire is solderd to the big copper patch on the serial right? hmmmm...man i hope this works...

yea great..knew i shouldnt tried this... one of my resistors just came off....perfect...guess ima put it all back together and just pray it works...

actullay thats a good idea i had tho hook mine up to my laptop first just so i made sure i got the positve and negative conects right just use a headphone wire run the white and red together and the ground will just be the open ugly wires and then just if running windows go to start/access /enertainment/voice recorder just make sure the mic isnt dissabled by double clicking the little speaker icon in the lower right

EDIT: here is a pic i made just to help out (https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi259.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh289%2Falexcylecopley%2FMIC.jpg&hash=a5832ac53b60fdac6926639bbf7dace4d46f55d2)

omg.... why didnt i ask before i did this :fear:  beautiful pic lol well i had tried to solder it to the resistor in the lower left corner  (even though i had a strong feeling it was the one you showed) and i guess i knocked the resistor off with the solder iron! then it dissapered. i havent noticed anything wrong my psp when put back together though except my power led dosent work  :sadno:...lol but i doubt that has anything to do with the serial port? well ima try to test my mic (didnt even think of that way with windows :hifive: lol) but is there any telling if this will still work with that resistor gone?

EDIT:

crap when ever i try to do the sound recorder thingy all i get is static :( the mic should work (at least it did before i opened it lol) so im guessing i dont have it wired correctly? (tried it a bunch of diff ways though) im trying to use it like it was inside the original headset without soldering my own wires to it since it has two wires coming from the mic already but their wrapped together inside a covering then split again at the end, does this matter? should i cut the covering and separate the two wires? im guess it should work since thats how it was in the headset?? ahhh  i dunno...wish i had some IDE  cable to use for wires cause these crappy thin wire suck and are hard to solder anyways ill put up a pic on how it looks in alil bit...

Nemesis: lol yh i no you cant delete your own post, but at least you recognised your mistake  :winker:

babyboi828 first at the end of the thin wires take a lighter to it since it has a thin plastic coating and then add a little solder to it and cut back the access amount and to the i lost the resistor guy i lost mine as well and the one udnder it just bridge them mine works fine so does my power led this is kinda embarrassing as i like to think of myself as one of the best

lol well ill try that later i guess...i have given up for now since after i finnally got a different mic i FINNALLY managed to solder the wire to everything but then i couldnt put the analog stick on right! (followed by the mobo and everything else do to the big peice of solder lol) i would be intersted in trying againg but ...:sadno: i have screwd up my lcd ( after oping my psp so many times id figured id leave the lcd attached while i work on the insides...i guess the screen went up and down too much and finnally the backlight ribbon snapped or something)...so i know this is off really topic but it would REALLLLLY help me to become motivated to try the mic thingy again ifi can fix this....is there anywhere i can find a replacement backlight ribbon, (for a slim of course, if it is even possible to replace  :dntknw:) so i dont have to buy a completly new screen??? (70 bucks!!!) i know my screen works i can see a faint image, I even managed to push the backlight ribbon up (instead of forwards into the socket) and got my backlight to work (while i hold it this way)! lol so i know the problem is with this ribbon... soooo please ill even buy one if i have too (grr) but if i really have to id buy a complete bricked slim i guess so i can have a bunch of extra parts and a whole new screen.....

o yea still havent noticed a problem from not having that resistor either my headphone jack works fine?.....but i bet if i just decide to buy a offical headset it wont work though or somthin

ok well i dont have much time but you could just buy the whole screen and backlight from anywhere from 59-118 us dollars here are some linkshttp://www.google.com/products?hl=en&q=psp+slim+lcd+backlight&um=1&ie=UTF-8 (http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&q=psp+slim+lcd+backlight&um=1&ie=UTF-8)http://www.dealextreme.com/products.dx/category.603 (http://www.dealextreme.com/products.dx/category.603)http://www.portatronics.com/index.php?cat=c61_PSP-Slim.html&XTCsid=574007a146cead7054b85dbdc47ad04f (http://www.portatronics.com/index.php?cat=c61_PSP-Slim.html&XTCsid=574007a146cead7054b85dbdc47ad04f)

yea thanks im pretty sure i could buy a new screen pretty easily just dont have any cash :( . im thinking about trying to make the mic tha way max made it but my soldering skill sucks so im worried about desoldering all those pins... hmm (my psp would stil lbe completly awesome without a screen if i could use furikup correctly lol)

(off topic) is there an easy way to make a backlight (just any kind of cheap light to brighten my screen untill i have enough money to but a whole new screen?,  since i cant find just a replacement backlight,?) lol (im tired of only being able to play lumines outside when the sun is shining bright lmao)

I'll try and help you out as I too am doing this to get it to work with Skype. I just scanned this topic so dont give me crap  :boxed:. Has anyone used the internal mic with skype? I did the install at 2am last night and got the plugin installed but when I tested with skype Test call I dont hear my voice.

Now I could have messed something up but DOUBT even at 2am. When I get home from work and before my Friday night ritual of GTA and COD4 till 5am I will look at the mic again. Wish me luckz

well by the time you read this lordnico hopefully you figured it out i dont know if you noticed when loading the skype program weather or not it told you that to make calls you need to use an audio input device that is compliant with the psp? mine said that. i still havent figured out crossing my skype crap over to a sip client or anything like that for the furlkip or how ever you spell that i can never remember. im glad you might be coming to the rescue if this helps i have plugged my remote in and when that is plugged in you dont need the plugin to get the mic to work for killzone. but still no skype. maybe the headset is a certain resistance i cant figure it out i have kinda been to busy on other projects but hopefully any of this will help you brainstorm

lol well i got another phone but now im broke and cant afford mins ARGH! lol btw i was wonderin if you can solder a mic to the serial port if its also possible to make your own tv output as well? or is that just completly out of the question? lol but anyway do you have to desolder all the pins if you want to connect the wires like you did?

you could do this i dont know what you would use it for i guess audio mechanic could record a session

no like on the back of the serial port itself i wouldnt attempt this if you cant get the other way right thats the easiest way i think you might just mess it up........
... also if it helps my wires come to the board to were i showed where to solder to the neg wire goes under and is soldered to the underside of the board so it shouldnt interfere with the joystick or anything else

well i got a box for my psp with powered speakers but it dont work like a pre amp so my guitar dont work on it,but if i could use my psp as a pre amp i could use my box and not have to take my amp with me to go play away from home

well i will try some things out i play and that would be cool but you wont have any distortion or anything it will work ill prove it haha give me a day i need to take pics for the other people that cant do it either so ill wire up my guitar to it and just use the speakers but you can just run a headphone ext with a stereo adapter ... i was thinking if you get a four pin 3.5mm headphone cable like they use in an ipod you could make a cable that would be like a link cable you would plug the box in and the guitar in then you dont need to mod the psp here is a link if you need help figureing it out ill make a picture for you in the morninghttp://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=socomftb&message.id=6639 (http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=socomftb&message.id=6639)

nevermind about the tv output thing (though i meant being able to watch my psp on my hdtv without buyin the component cables..yes i am super broke now ive  quit my jobs  :cry2:...but at least ive discovered...donating plasma! gonna try today lmfao) ahem but anyway im going to reattempt this with the two points (iam showed) but its a pain in the  :censored: for me to solder to that one resistor, what exactly did yall mean by "scratching off the solder mask"

sigh..im also runing out of mics to use lol ive run through about 5 or 6 different kinds, ive made one i think sould work but i cant evn find it  :boxed: but um a long time ago i swear i remeber my friend using a half broken earphone as a mic for his computer. is this possible? or was i just tripping  lol if it is i can start taking apart headphones instead of cellphones :P

it might have worked on his computer cause it might have a stronger pre amp i dont know how effective this would work with the psp just plugg your mic into the mic input of your comp and test that way and i think my pic shows a little better dont solder to the other point that iam did solder to the one on the back that is labled with the number four not that his doesnt work but it might get in the way of the nub

ok well i tested it with my guitar heres what i found out you could do this as a pre amp i have an internal mic so with the volume up i got feedback at first but you wont have this issue you will need to tap into the sound board like the internal mic and put a second headphone jack somewhere as an input also if your using audio mechanica i dont know if it will stopp when you have to big a reel for your mc i didnt run into this but i didnt play a whole song either if you got a different program then share the link cause this is a pretty good idea and i would like to look into it further...it would be cool if they made some sort of guitar tracks pro for the psp or something hahaha hope this helps if your still interested

I am not sure of which is which, It came attached to a ffc.  Neither the mic the ffc or the pcb gave any indication as which was input and which was ground.  So I wired it in, wired in the A/V side and tested it with the UMD door off to determine which was the better.  The wrong connection will not pick up as clear or as loud as the correct connection.

Hello, yes I REALIZE bumping an old topic is CONSIDERED spam. But hear me out. This would be extremely stupid to make a new topic for just this.

To anyone looking to do this mod, IT DOES work with Audio Mechanica 8 AND SOCOM FTB2, I myself was unsure when I did this mod there was no clear answer. But if your like me and you don't really use any other features that require a MIC other then SOCOM. Put your fears to rest.
