Hello again,
I'm looking to buy a broken DS Lite off of eBay to do repairs so I can mod it. The user states that he gets the screen to turn on, but nothing shows up (blank white). Apparently he tried to fix the top screen too.
I've never had this problem and obviously have not ever tried to repair the problem, so if I want to buy this, do you guys know how to fix this? Sounds like a flat cable problem to me, possibly in the connector. I've heard of this taping method, but how/why does this work?

Yeah it does, but ask if there are any cosmetic problems (i.e- cracked hinge, broken top shell, water/smoke/child damage, etc.) Usually it's either a busted fuse, or a broken top/bottom screen, usually top.

Yeah, I'll do that tonight. He claims he even tried to replace it, so I'm sure he'll know what I'm talking about if it's the ribbon connector.

If it turns on and the screen is blank white it's just a stupid ribbon cable(FPC) and the screen is ok.
Buy it fast.The tape method is guaranteed to work and fix this issue.

A method where you basically put thin tape (adhesive tape, for like.. crafts and whatnot) around the ribbon, which somehow makes it readable by the ribbon connector on the motherboard. (I don't really know what I'm talking about, if someone would like to verify this claim... :P)

Rather not say you don't, but part of what you said is misleading. It doesn't go AROUND the ribbon, just on the top end of it, so the pins are still free of tape so they can have contact, the top side of the pins have tape so it can push the pins down when it goes inside and gives it more contact in the clip.

The tape method is something I thought for making FPC's(ribbon cables) fatter so they can stay nice inside the connectors even without the clips that push the FPC down to make contact with the pins.Here's a quote when I first uploaded my method with pics.

I had the same problem with a
ds when I joined and a friend
who's more patient than me fix it.
Another possible problem could be
backlight.The ds shuts down if backlight
isn't functioning.Anyway I got the pics
with the tape method I use for broken clips.
I use it to make ribbon cables thicker so
the stay nice inside the connectors even without
the clip things.Be carefull when inserting taped

(By the way, is that a... Chinese food menu in the background?)
Anyway, I won the auction for the DS Lite. Hopefully it'll be here in a week or so and I'll get crackin' on some mods!

Yeah, hopefully I can get it to work. After just breaking the power switch on my other DS, I'm having withdrawal symptoms.

Any tape that's thin enough so it's not fat and can't get in the connector when applied to the FPC.
Remember single sided tape.

I put some transparent tape on it but still the bottom screen flashes. Im probably going to have to buy a new screen.

I just got the DS Lite in the mail today. I don't have my tools with me at the moment, but I'll probably try to fix it tomorrow. The guy wasn't very careful in putting it back together; the rubber pads over the top shell and under the bottom part are missing, and the top shell parts are misaligned (with some gunk in them). There are many scratches, too. :\
Oh well, if I can fix the top screen, I'll just get a new case like I was planning on.
