Title: q6600 vs p4
Post by: loganbyers07 on July 08, 2008, 07:55:45 AM
Okay so I realize that p4 basicaly sucks. I am building a new computer. My dad got a 680i motherboard and a q6600 processor and he thinks that this old 3.2 ghz p4 chip that he bought for like 40 bucks could keep up with it because the q6600 only runs at 2.4 ghz stock.( I know that you can overclock it to run at like 3.2 ghz on air cooling.) but he wants me to take the p4 chip and build a computer arround it. But he wants me to Be able to run dreamweaver flash photoshop and the works. I am trying to explain to him why the chip wont do. Any recomendations on how to talk him into getting another combo like he just bought.? I dont want to buy a really good video card yet. Just so that he can get used to the idea of dropping $300 for me and then for my birthday or something I will ask for a card. Or I may have enough money buy then to buy it myself. I also want to run crysis and games of that sort. So if you could recomend how to talk him into the motherboard combo. And recomend A video Card I would really apreciate it. I am in the 200-299 range for price on the video card for down the road a couple of weeks.

I whould do though, i have a friend who plays assasins creed full detail with a p4 3.2ghz. There good but olny one core. For crysis a q6600 will be better because crysis uses more than one core...

P4 is fine for everyday use, but in gaming it starts to show its age. Really tho I think it would be fine for photoshop and junk, I mean my sis did graphics/web design (photoshop, not dreamweaver.. She does coldcoding) on an old P2 before I built the new computers. It took awhile to load tho lol. Was one of the things that you'd open up and grab yourself something to drink while waiting for it to finish. Should be able to handle most single core games fine btw, just wouldn't try anything new like age of conan or crysis.. Or games that use alot of CPU power (newer rts games).

Dual core is the standard nowadays.  I have the q6600 and my old laptop has a 2.66 GHZ processor, doing the same task on ANYTHING the quadcore absolutely smokes the laptop cpu.  I can encode entire DVD's in 4-5 minutes, whereas with the laptop it would take closer to an hour to do so...

Quad core is faster, as in some ways its 2.4Ghx x 4, and then in some it isnt.

If you are just running one program, you will see very little difference, but as more programs are opened, the extra cores will show there use.

i think I will end up going ahead and buying it for myself because today I got a job making $100 a month mowing a yard twice a month. It is a big yard but he has a riding lawn mower. And I will get paid a little extra working with my dad so by september or so I will be able to build my rig. I am putting back a little money for gas but thanks for the help. Oh and I figured out what we are going to do with the p4. We are going to build a server ( :

Thanks Acidmods.

I was going to suggest loading it with hard drives and using it as network storage, so good idea!  I've got an old p4 with 2 terrabytes hooked up to my network right now for music/videos and such that can be accessed from any PC in the house and my laptop from anywhere  :victory:

That might be a good idea for me too. I have an old dell I guess i could hook it up over an internet and use it to store movies and such.

Not if you think outside the box, that one single core has to run the OS and everything in the background and THEN the program, whereas on a dual/quadcore the entire core can be utilized specifically.

yea my dad got his q6600 and 680 motherboard in today and I put it together and have vista installing as I speak. Or type whatever. I am really excited about this server I think I am going to make it a Linux Server.

Edit: So I finished the install sucessfully
( :

I overclocked the processor already. It is running At 3.6 ghz ( i think) it is really wierd. I booted it up after overclocking it and looked at the specs and it said q6600@ 2.4 ghz then it said beside it 3.6ghz
so i ran cpuz and it fluctuates between 2.4 and 3.6 is it supposed to do that?

I think the OS and Mobo combined are clocking the CPU Back to save power, but the top end is now 3.6Ghz.

It's completely normal, the multiplier changes from 6-9 to save power (as stated above)
