Ok ive been haveing this problem alot recently and its pissing me off. I repair consoles for a game shop near my house and i allways get psps with broken umd drives and no matter how many and what kind of umd drive i put in them it wont work ive tried everything they seem completely normal never been opened or hacked and the mobo seems to just stop recognizeing umd drives. The thing that makes me so mad is that i spend the time opening and playing with diff umd drives in it then i dont fix it and i dont get paid. So i was wondering if anyone else comes acros this problem or maybe a fix?

ive never heard of this before. The only time my umd drive didnt work was one time I forgot to plug it in when I was putting my psp back together. You could replace the mobo of the psp too and then charge more for the repair. LOL.

are there fuses on the mobo for the laser or motor that could be bad?
-
its the umdcontroller on the mobo. only way to fix it is replace the mobo

how can you be so shure?

lol welll if the ribon lines up and the drive work on other mobo then the mobo umd controller is dead. LoL most likely the motor ribbon

I have been studying the motherboard a lot lately. The servo controller IS on the motherboard.
The UMD drive is a very cheaply made drive and most of the time if goes out of alignment and quits working.
But the driver chip is on the motherboard and it goes sometimes. The driver is built into one of the other LSI chips.
I would tell the shop that on UMD problems you have a minumum diagnostic charge even if you don't fix it. Also that fixing it may require a motherboard change. Your diagnostic charge for UMD problems would cover your labor and if just changing the UMD fixes it you would only charge the additional charge for the UMD drive.
This way if you open a PSP you get paid !

ya but id feel bad because i make alot for umd drive repairs when it is just the drive and i just replace the drive with one from a my scrap pile from destroyed psps we get but ok i get it now it it unrealistic to try and replace the part i was hopeing it would be like a cap or something i could take off a scrap mobo
