Title: Hard Drive in PSP
Post by: gr8npwrfl on August 10, 2008, 11:06:00 PM
This is an introduction to Putting a Hard Drive in, on, or around your PSP.

]Lets answer some questions first

A usb hard disk is a slave device
A PSP is a slave device
A IPOD is a slave device

It takes a Master device to start talking on the USB bus. Slaves can NOT
talk to Slaves. There is NO WAY of changing software to make a slave device
a Master. Just putting linux on the PSP or IPOD does not make them a Master device.

People here are working on 2 systems that put a mini Master device between
the PSP and a hard drive. We have shown videos of this working. It is a work
in progress and yes there will be a master device inside the PSP, but it is
months away yet.

We have an external mini server that is running and you can build now. It
does the same thing that running usbhostfs_pc and nethostfs_pc does on your
PC running Windows or Linux.

There is no combination of adapters to make a hard drive work in the PSP.

NONE.

You can not take the pro duo to compact flash adapter and then plug in an
compact flash to ide adapter and then plug in an IDE hard drive. It would
work if you want to write an operating system for it. The PSP does not have
an operating system for IDE hard drives.

Let me explain a little about the CFW that most of us run. It is still based
on Sony Firmware for the PSP. Dark Alex and his team as well as many others
that make custom firmware, PATCH the Sony Firmware to add all the additional
functions.

At this point NO ONE has written an entire operating system for the PSP.
Installing Linux does not give you access to the hardware of the PSP.

The PSP is a trade secret. Our Custom Firmware makes calls to the original
operating system, because Sony had to release a certain amount of information
so that game companies could write games for the PSP.

We do not know exactly what goes on inside certain chips, we can make
educated guesses what they mainly do, but what bits do what we don't know.

So asking someone to write some custom code to do a hard drive is like asking
someone to quit their job and be your slave as long as you desire. Unless
you are willing to put up a couple hundred thousand dollars it is not going
to happen.

Here is a list of articles and threads that are ongoing here on AcidMods
We will update this list as more are added. Please read these articles entirely
before posting and asking questions. You will see many people are working
on what you are asking and most of the questions you will have are answered
in the listed threads.

Ok but the other day i found and buy a Sata to SPI adapter, also i have an SPI to miniJack-male adapter.Don't you think that if i plug this Sata to a hard drive and then to the SPI-miniJack adapter and then i plug it into the sound miniJack female output of the PSP it won't read the Hdd?
:taunt: Just jockin. I see in your post the end of your patience, what i understand perfectly.

At this point NO ONE has written an entire operating system for the PSP.

There was a guy who almost had finished a new firmware for the PSP (DotOs was called the OS). It looked awsome but finally for personal reasons wasn't able to finish it.

Installing Linux does not give you access to the hardware of the PSP.

Yeah that's the point, moreover when the only ways to load linux in a PSP is by emulating softwares. Except uCLinux which gives an idea of the difficulty level of the "running linux on a PSP" stuff. Eventhough as you said, an slave is an slave and no way it could be a master

this is great now all we need to do is get some other info like where are all the tuts and such. and make a combined page.  I'll do it tomorrow because it's late here and I need to get to bed.

I wonder if we can have a post like a wiki.

It would be great if a few particular items could have their own wiki here on AcidMods

OR

Create a direct link to the AcidMods wiki page. Then as a new question is asked about
a particular project it could be added to the FAQ section and the comprehensive knowledge
would keep growing and getting better all the time.

Is that possible here to create a stickied topic that was a permanent link that would take
us to an AcidMods Wiki ?

we used to have our own wiki but it died because all the images became broken links

So if I found someone to host the image links so they would not die.

Or ran a script (BOT) that would hit all the links once a month so the images would not die
would you want to have it back up ?

If I am not mistaken the image links come down because someone does not access
it for over a month. The bot could be turned loose once a month to exersize every
link and keep them active.

actually we host all own images on acidmods now so they will never break, we didn't do it before on the wiki because we didn't have it

Again,

Please read this before asking if you can plug this or that together to get
a hard drive working on the PSP.

Hi!

please check this video I uploaded. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dENm3JevlRY

this works, it's an extern HDD case, it works a normal OTG but with the IRshel and Usbisoloader it works directly, not copying the files to the MS.

It's the best chance I found

cheers

if a hard drive is a slave device and a psp is a slave device, then how can you use the GO!cam, or the GPS?

also, wouldn't the memorycard be considered a slave device too???

or is the hard drive a slave device and the memory card NOT a slave device because the hard drive requires a usb and the memory card is *special* because it has different prongs that make it *magically* not be a slave device and gives powers to the psp to be a temporary master???
