Title: Rapidfire Help.
Post by: sean7341 on August 20, 2008, 09:38:46 AM
Hello, I have been reading non-stop about making rapidfire controllers.  I still have a few questions that I haven't found answers to.

Which method is the best for new/old controllers?

For old, can I simply do the "no chip" method that is found here:
https://www.acidmods.com/forum/index.php?topic=21716.0 (https://www.acidmods.com/forum/index.php?topic=21716.0)

For new, can I just buy this kit:
http://wiredinput.com/ShopUSA/product_info.php?products_id=76&osCsid=9a9b4fbf577008dd173bc2a15825cb0d (http://wiredinput.com/ShopUSA/product_info.php?products_id=76&osCsid=9a9b4fbf577008dd173bc2a15825cb0d)

Or, like this kit says, can I use the kit for both old and new controllers?

Also, this is the part list I have made:

15 watt soldering iron
solder
30 gauge wire
switch(http://wiredinput.com/ShopUSA/product_info.php?products_id=75 (http://wiredinput.com/ShopUSA/product_info.php?products_id=75))
xbox screwdriver(http://wiredinput.com/ShopUSA/product_info.php?cPath=23&products_id=30 (http://wiredinput.com/ShopUSA/product_info.php?cPath=23&products_id=30))

Also, what size bit do I need to drill into the controller to place the button?

Help is greatly appreciated.

*sigh*...
Just buy a chip from that store, they're best for all of them. Don't do the no chip method, it's not that good and only works if certain variables are met.
Obviously that kit will work on both, it SAYS it will. Why wouldn't it work then?

Parts list is fine.
And for the button hole, it all depends on the button. Wait till you get it then drill it depending on how big it is...

also i have found it easier to start with a small bit and work your way up to the size you want. it looks cleaner and it is much easier.

This is the image from the 3 wire kit:

Does it include 2 buttons?

Also, is there anywhere cheaper to get the screwdriver from?  $10 is a little pricy.  My PSP screwdriver was $2.

yeah theres 2 buttons in the picture so you get 2 buttons. also check ebay for torx security drivers

Alright, and is there any difference between the 3 wire kit and the regular no-chip method?  Is it the same procedure and does it give the same results?
Title: Re: Rapidfire Help.
Post by: Winterz117 on August 20, 2008, 02:04:55 PM
no, the three wire kit uses a programmed pic microcontroller. anything that uses a pic is going to be more consistent, in this case. go with the kits or just the chips that mike is selling on wired input

buy a chip or get one from somewhere its worth it cause its guaranteed to work unless u fie the chip or controller

I am a little confused about the screwdriver bit to use.  Is it just a T9 bit?
Title: Re: Rapidfire Help.
Post by: Winterz117 on August 22, 2008, 05:50:39 AM
its a t9 security bit. regular t9's dont have the little indent in the middle

Do you know if I could get them at ACE hardware?  I recently found one near me.
Title: Re: Rapidfire Help.
Post by: Winterz117 on August 23, 2008, 12:01:15 PM
just get a really small flathead and jam it in one side of the screw. thats what i do now and it works just fine
Title: Re: Rapidfire Help.
Post by: sean7341 on August 24, 2008, 09:24:06 AM
Alright, I will be buying these things:

http://www.acehardwareoutlet.com/(pstqzg55pipmbtyh40qpv155)/productDetails.aspx?SKU=2105872 (http://www.acehardwareoutlet.com/(pstqzg55pipmbtyh40qpv155)/productDetails.aspx?SKU=2105872)

And 2 of these:

http://wiredinput.com/ShopUSA/product_info.php?products_id=76&osCsid=975ec79d9928b5a05170a17457d3790e (http://wiredinput.com/ShopUSA/product_info.php?products_id=76&osCsid=975ec79d9928b5a05170a17457d3790e)

I will be adding some LEDs since the controller will be open too.  Blue should be a nice change.

Final cost: around $25.  Not bad at all.

Anything else I need?
Title: Re: Rapidfire Help.
Post by: Winterz117 on August 24, 2008, 07:16:18 PM
hey dont get that bit it wont fit into the deeper holes where the screws are in the bottom. and if you want cheap leds go to sickmods.net  i got a bunch of leds from them like 20 cents each and they shipped fast for lik 4 bucks
Title: Re: Rapidfire Help.
Post by: sean7341 on August 25, 2008, 06:05:35 AM
Alright, where should I get the bit from?  I can't think of anywhere alse.
Title: Re: Rapidfire Help.
Post by: sean7341 on August 25, 2008, 06:07:12 AM
Also, will I need any resistors if I put blue or UV LEDs in the controller?
Title: Re: Rapidfire Help.
Post by: Winterz117 on August 25, 2008, 06:33:05 AM
if you have a really small flathead just use that, it works fine. you could try autozne if you really want a torx tho, i think they have them. check the site first. as for your resistors, yes you will need them. for 4 20ma blue leds wired in parallel its a 22ohm resistor (same thing for white ones) . if your doing anything different than that check the resistor  calculator http://ledcalc.com/#parallel
Title: Re: Rapidfire Help.
Post by: sean7341 on August 25, 2008, 06:42:16 AM
So, I can't just swap out the LEDs?  I plan on doing blue ones first.  How do I wire the resistors in?
Title: Re: Rapidfire Help.
Post by: Winterz117 on August 25, 2008, 08:26:38 AM
ohoh nvm i thought you meant leds for like the dome or buttons and stuff. sry thats what im doing. if your gong to swap out the ring lights on your controllers you just take the green ones off and put in your new ones. make sure you put them on the right way tho. yeah you dont need resistors for the ring on your controller
Title: Re: Rapidfire Help.

Great, that doesn't sound hard now.  Do you know where I can get the correct bit?  I need it fast, so a local place would be great.  Or if someone has an extra on here, I can buy it from them.
Title: Re: Rapidfire Help.

Also, I bought this kit:

http://wiredinput.com/ShopUSA/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=76&osCsid=975ec79d9928b5a05170a17457d3790e (http://wiredinput.com/ShopUSA/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=76&osCsid=975ec79d9928b5a05170a17457d3790e)

Is the only game it works in COD4?  That wouldn't be a problem, but working in Halo 3 or other FPS games would be great.
Title: Re: Rapidfire Help.
Post by: Winterz117 on August 25, 2008, 10:29:44 AM
you want to avoid bits because they wont be long enough, just look around i guess, i havent even found one thats not in a set. the rapid fire works in all games with semi auto guns, but not in halo, because its too fast and halo doesnt recognize it
Title: Re: Rapidfire Help.
Post by: tripsalot on August 25, 2008, 10:58:44 AM
if you need a driver fast try the local auto parts shop and hardware stores, might be a bit more than buying on the net but probably faster

I got the cheapest shipping.  It was less than $2 for 3x 3-wire rapid fire kits.  I got an "order update" email yesterday telling me I would be getting a tracking number soon.  It also told me the item would ship out today(which was yesterday).

I just hope I get the stuff before Friday.

Thanks!  Also, can you tell me the difference between the 3 wire kit and the dual triggers kit?  I know both work on old and new controllers, but I can't figure out the difference.
Title: Re: Rapidfire Help.
Post by: Winterz117 on August 26, 2008, 08:50:08 AM
the 3 wire kit puts rapid fire on the buttons you install, so you press the buttons to shoot with rapid fire. the dual trigger kit makes teh buttons toggle rapidfire on and off the right and left triggers, so you press the button to turn rapid on and then you can shoot with the triggers like normal
Title: Re: Rapidfire Help.
Post by: sean7341 on August 26, 2008, 09:14:37 AM
Thank you, that cleared up everything.

So that means the 3 wire kit makes it possible to press rapidfire or regular fire whenever you want without switching, right?  It is just different buttons for the 2 different actions.  That is awesome!

Has anyone tested this with gears of war?  My friend and I have started playing through the co op story and are loving it!  This would add to the fun.

yep you got it, the new buttons do the shooting, and there never on or off. im going to go test this in gears right now, well as soon as i put my controller back together. i put a bunch of leds in the buttons and stuff, so its really crowded in there :P

Can you take a picture so I can see?  I'm interested.  I will only be putting LEDs in the Xbox button of the controller.

EDIT: Also, did you do use the 3-wire kit?

How about both?  What is the difference from that method and the method I will be using?  What is the point of programming your own pics if you can buy them for barely anything?

Same here!  I am charging mine for parts though.  I am asking $15 for rapidfire because the kit is $10ish and the iron/solder/screwdriver added up to around $20.  So in the end it is around $15 each.  I might be making a dollar or two in there.  How much harder is programming?

well you can either make a programmer for ablout 10 bucks or buy one from 25 dollars to hundreds of dollars. i guess it just depends on what you want to do

What does a programmer do?
Title: Re: Rapidfire Help.
Post by: Winterz117 on August 26, 2008, 05:30:21 PM
you download winpic, a programming software, plug the programmer in, put a blank chip in the programmer, put the hex into the software click program and then you have a rapid fire chip

Hm, so what does the average cost of a chip cost if you made, lets say, 15 chips?

you dont really even need a tut, ill tell you right now how to doit, i did it in 10 mins max, half of that waiting for glue to dry. get ur button and cut out some of the supports, but leave a plus in the middle so that the button still works, because thats where it hits the rubber thing. then take your leds, i used 4 red ones. then fill the button up with some hot glue and put your leds, facing the positive legs (the long ones) out and the negative ones in (short legs) then let the glue dry. then make a ring with one of the inside legs and solder all the other inside legs to it. also make sure the ring is completed (connect the end to the start) then connect a wire to the ring. put some more glue in and do the same thing to the long legs on the outside. also it is very important that  when you are done that the plus we made is the highest point because otherwise the button wont feel right. if you have any questions let me know :P

I think we are talking about different things.  I am talking about the Xbox button in the center of the controller.  Are you talking about the AXBY buttons?
Title: Re: Rapidfire Help.

Great, I will probably be asking you about that.  Do you have any pictures of your AXBY buttons lit up?  I am curious to see how it actually looks.

About the Xbox guide button, I just swapped the LEDs surrounding it.  After looking at the physical button I understood what you were talking about.  I think that is the next step.  I want to get really good at swapping the ring LEDs first.  It still shocks me how small those things are.

thats with a generic controller so it doesnt really look as good with a reg one. i put an on/off switch so you can shut the leds off if you want, because the guide button is really bright haha :P but yeah i can help just ask  :winker:

Winterz, its cool.

I also bought the bit from Ace Hardware, but it doesn't fit in the deepest screws of the controller.  I remember someone telling me that, but I decided to try anyway.  I bought a screwdriver on ebay for $5 that is built amazingly.  I haven't had a single problem trying to get a screw out.  I wish I bought a few more.

On another note, I successfully completed the rapidfire mod!  My controller has the added button(which I am not a huge fan of).  I think I will be buying some different buttons after I go through all my tact switches.  I also have an LED swapped out.  Right now it is just player 2 switched to blue, but I ordered a handful of LEDs from Mike and will be installing them as they come.

Thanks for the help guys!!  I will probably still need more!

Hey, I need more rapidfire help.  I have done about 5 successful rapidfire jobs now, all on new style wireless controllers.

I am doing my first old style now.

This is the diagram I am following:

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi167.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu136%2Fkingmike_001%2F3WIRE3-1.jpg&hash=4f321cfc9ffd89ce2d9e087a22d95c2182d38628)

I have everything wired correctly.  When I test it out in COD4, it just shoots once when I press down on it.  No rapidfire.  It just acts as a single shot button.

What am I doing wrong?

Ugh, I need some help too please.

I was installing my "New and Old" chip on an old wireless board... everything went smooth, but I think I burned the chip out near D6 because I was trying to do a sleeper install and now these buttons don't work:

Right Bumper, X, Back and Sync

After doing some looking at the traces on:
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=581887

They all use the same trace to the main chip...

Does anybody know how I can test this theory or fix the problem?

Thanks,
-Doug

I'm not sure about you, but my problem is fixed.  I was wiring wrong.
