Title: easiest programer to build!! with schematic, and parts list. Cost $10
Post by: gameroms on August 23, 2008, 08:35:21 AM
this works on desktops only ill make a simple one for laptop also, this works great for PIC 12F, 16F series

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi236.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff84%2Fgameroms%2Fpicprogramer.gif&hash=f52d123b0836853b35739db3e3e159231d27482d)

ive been using one i built like this for 1yr now no problems
replace the 22k resistor with a 2.2k resistor, and replace the 1uf cap with a 10 uf cap.

Is there any way to add a 14 pin socket or other sockets onto it?

Wait.... Why is this in the 360 section?

Is there any that can be interfaced through USB? I wouldnt mind having to pay a little more money to be able to interface through usb.

RADIO SHACK PARTS LIST

1 -- 276-565 -- 5.1V ZENER DIODE -- $1.39 -- QTY 3
1 -- 276-1122 -- 1N4148 SWITCHING DIODE -- $1.49 -- QTY 5
2 -- 272-1025  -- 10UF CAP -- $1.19 -- QTY 1
1 -- 271-1325  -- 2.2K OHM RESISTOR -- $0.99 -- QTY 5
1 -- 271-1335  -- 10K OHM RESISTOR -- $0.99 -- QTY 5
1 -- 271-1339  -- 22K OHM RESISTOR -- $0.99 -- QTY 5
1 -- 276-1995  -- 8-PIN SOCKET -- $0.69 -- QTY 2
1 -- 276-148  -- PROJECT BOARD -- $1.99 -- QTY 2

                   TOTAL: $9.72 PLUS TAX

THE ABOVE PARTS LIST DOESNT INCLUDE A DB-9 SERIAL CABLE TO CONNECT TO PCB, YOULL NEED TO CUT IT IN HALF AND YOU CAN MAKE 2 PROGRAMMERS, BECAUSE YOULL HAVE ENOUGH PARTS LEFT OVER TO MAKE A SECOND PROGRAMER.

BUT I PREFER TO ORDER ONE OF THESR FOR $5.99, I HAVE 2 AND THEY WORK GREAT, AND IF YOU MAKE ONE IT WONT LOOK AS GOOD AS THE KIT!   :w00t:

And can you programm all types of PICs with this?
I currently have the PICKit2 starter kit,
but my friend wants one.

So on the second one i can use a DB-9 to USB cable, but not on any of the others? It looks like that one calls for another power source.  What is the GND and 5v parts, another power source?

heres what you need for a laptop, and thes gouys are good and ship quick.

some times those adapters dont work,  i would just order the usb programer

buy the time you buy parts and adapter, be same price for programer that you know is gonna work.

Hey, I was just wondering, I can just put a 14 pin socket on, right? Also, what kind of DB-9 cable do you use, because my moms desktop doesnt have DB-9, i think the lowest count it has is DB-25. Can i use a DB-9 to DB-25 cable? Why cant i just use a DB-9 to usb cable?

get a db9 pci card for $9.99

you can get the usb adapter but hte 2 i have dont work with a progeamer, just order the usb programmer i linked you to, its cheaper in the long run cause your gonna need a db9 pci card, db9 cable, parts for programmer.

do your self a favor and get a usb programer.

usb programmer $19.07 from a trusted seller, they have a great support forum on their website if you ever have questions or problems.

need some help here.
I built the simpler schematic without the zener diodes.
When i launch winpic, the programmer reports that it has been initialized properly.
However, when i read the chip, it always reports read failed or blank, and when I program the chip, it always fails with verify errors,

Any help here is appreciated.

This is the circuit I built
One other thing to note is that instead of the 170 mosfet, I substituted the 2n7000.  I beleive the datasheets are pretty much identical.
not 100% sure though.

Also, the schematic shows programming a 629, however, I'm using this programmer for a 683.  should be fine right ?

that is the one I use, it works with my desktop.

I had a few troubles getting started, thry these two things, then test all your soldering points

first off, in winpic menu, change the device type to JDG, it wont read this you must manually set it.
second, make sure the file path is less than 26 caracters, (C:allusers/documentsandsettings/desktop/.....etc) I drop the hex on my desktop before I open win pic

thoses were the only two problems I had

I am at work and dont have winpic here let me start the download, but yes there should be a device tab, jdg is the type of programer.

Sorry, it is JDM not JDG

not cool, I downloaded the spanish version insted of english by mistake, anyway, after that was corrected, do this:

open win pic
click on configuration tab
click on hardware
select JDM programer---(the default is GTP-usb)

thanks again matt.
So I have that working.  When I click read device, it reads the pic ok.
I still cannot program though.
it looks like I'm making progress.

I am operating this with a laptop and usb-> serial
I'm wondering about voltages.
What voltage should I read on the pins of the chip.  I'm reading about 4v on pin1 and pin4 6v.

Also, on the mosfet.  is the pin out drain, gate, source if we read the schematic left to right ?

so I didn't get this working with the laptop, but I have a pc at work with a serial port.  Hooked it up and the circuit programmed my chip right away.
Something seems off.  Maybe it's my usb-> serial adapter.

At least I know that my circuit is built properly now.
Thanks for all the help!!

I'm going to give this a try and wanted o know if  someone can take a good picture of how the wires connect to everything. I'm not sure that I understand the schematic. Thanks and be easy on me I'm very new to all this.

sure, as long as you pass that 40, wait that was ten years ago, now days we need a cup 2 cups LOL!! I cannot speak for the usb type programmer. and I know a usb to serial adapter wont work. but this works great with a serial port.

***tip for schematics:

when things are drawn on paper its hard to show what conects and what wires pass by each other, when they are usually drawn, the wires that conect are solid threw the intersection (here the conecting intersections are distinguished by red dots) normally when wires just pass over one another the line is not drawn straight through, it looks kind of like this  ]  a bridge if you will is drawn in over the intersection. in this diagram, the intersections, that are not conections, are just drawn straight through with no red dot. make since??

here are some pics:

the diagram is fairly straight forward. let me know if you have questions. it is a mess, I threw it together in about 15 mins, not some of my best work by far but it gets the job done.

I think I'm going to try this but probably use an enclosure to make it more decent looking.

Hi guys, I just wanted to confirm that the usb powerd version does work. I use this programmer now and i  cant say it works 100% but it does code the chips. I am using pic 683's for thsi and they do work. Just felt that i had to clarify this to let you know that it is a working programer

I could use some help on this:

Built the serial programmer and winpic800 is not detecting the device. I'm running windows 7, not sure if that is the problem, the programmer, or the pic. It tells me it reads it, but it is getting an error while writing (verification fails). I have it set to JDM.

For detect device I get device unknown
For hardware test I get hardware is not responding

thanks

It may not be properly installed.

It may not be properly installed.

The software may not be properly installed or the programmer incorrectly assembled?
-I've tried it on 2 machines, not sure how to install it differently. DLing Windows 98 to see if that will help (doubtful).
-I've double/triple checked my assembly, everything seems correct except the pin numbering labeled on the outside of my serial port is not the same as the diagram. But from the pictures in the thread, I have it wired to the same pins as everyone else(I didn't even see the labels on the casing till after I was done).

-Can someone confirm that this programmer/winpic800 work on windows 7?

edit: i'm retarded, wasted 5hrs of my life because I used the wrong pin numbering. Works perfect now(on w7) and FLEX code is working in my xbox controller. Thanks for the great resources here

-Zener diode - QF47B
-1N4148 - QL80B
- DIP Socket - BL17T
- 10uf Cap - AT98G
- DB9 Connector - RK61R(socket) or RK60Q(plug)
- resistors - http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?MenuNo=12459 (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?MenuNo=12459)

i'm assuming you have wire and stuff already though?

I went to radio shack and got a little bit of the parts, they didn't have all of them, then i noticed this all was in 08.. lol but i assume it should still work? does it matter what the wattage is of the resistors? and if the capacitors are disc capacitors or the other bigger ones?

did you check these numbers?
1 -- 276-565 -- 5.1V ZENER DIODE -- $1.39 -- QTY 3
1 -- 276-1122 -- 1N4148 SWITCHING DIODE -- $1.49 -- QTY 5
2 -- 272-1025  -- 10UF CAP -- $1.19 -- QTY 1
1 -- 271-1325  -- 2.2K OHM RESISTOR -- $0.99 -- QTY 5
1 -- 271-1335  -- 10K OHM RESISTOR -- $0.99 -- QTY 5
1 -- 271-1339  -- 22K OHM RESISTOR -- $0.99 -- QTY 5
1 -- 276-1995  -- 8-PIN SOCKET -- $0.69 -- QTY 2
1 -- 276-148  -- PROJECT BOARD -- $1.99 -- QTY 2

                   TOTAL: $9.72 PLUS TAX

I use a 1/4 watt resistor as listed ,  i have use 1/2 watt resistors
as for  the capacitors use the cylinder type . if one radio shack doesn't have them you can always buy off ebay or try another radio shack.

using a usb adapter caused me all manner of problems, its works great just using a serial cable and connecting it to my comm port on my pc.

my mobo doesnt have a com port :( and the PCI cards are expensive, the mobo has a spot on the inside and it says JCOM but im not sure if that is the same thing.

is it 9 pin? same fitting as a comm port?
Title: Re: easiest programer to build!! with schematic, and parts list. Cost $10

noo, its not the one on the back, i know what that one is, im talking about on the INSIDE on the mobo itself, not coming out of the back, it looks like a USB hub where you hook in the extra USBs that your case has, but instead of saying USB1 or whatever it says JCOM1

is it an msi mobo? You need to have a Serial COM bracket with the correct 9-pin assignment connection to use it as a comm port.

its definately worth buying one. i have found that programmers work best through comm ports as the usb programmers i have tried and read about are nothing but aggro.

oh and if you consider getting a programmer from ebay be very careful as there are a lot of dodgy chinese knock offs that dont work, i have fallen victim to one of these knock off sellers.

so if i got that card it would work in the JCOM port?

yes it should do. from what i have been reading online and from what my friend tells me once the card is installed you can just mount it on the pc case and use it as a regular com port, you may be able to get a card with multiple comm ports if needed.
