Title: alternative ipod video interface?
Post by: Tri-edge on August 31, 2008, 01:19:18 PM
I just got a ipod video 30gb yesterday and I really hate using itunes.  Is there anyway to make the ipod work like the psp? just plug it in and drag and drop file on the ipod to make it work? or something that doesn't use itunes at all?

WINamp. winamp.com and also get the ipod plugins.

It's called WINamp for a reason ;) ;)
Best music player. Period.

I already said that, why post it again?

That's not what I'm talking about. I want to get rid of all everything and just be able to drag and drop songs (and movies) WITHOUT a special program to do it for me.  I want something like custom firmware on the psp.  I want to be able to connect it to my computer and have it show up as a flash drive or something like that and be able to drop say movie files in a movie folder and have them play just like that.

Try using Linux. The site's been down though. ipodlinux.org. I don't think you can do that though. You can enable disk use to SEE files, but just dragging and dropping won't let you play anything.

because 1000 words is worth a 1000 words.
Whatever.
dslitemodder, install Rockbox (rockbox.org) on the iPod. It has a file browser and you can just drag and drop music on and play it.
You can still boot into the original ipod OS using button combos, but you won't be able to paly the songs you dragged and dropped onto it.

I already installed rockbox on it, but I can't play any videos on it, so I'm back to square one again.

Get Used to iTunes, the best Media Player.

I would die without Playlists, and the organization.

I'll look into playing videos in RB. There's an mpeg plugin but I haven't messed with it yet so I don't know.

Nope.

Download

Like all plugins documented on this website, MPEGplayer is included in the standard Rockbox installation and does not need to be downloaded separately. NOTE: Viewer plugins like MPEGplayer do not appear in the Browse Plugins menu - they are launched by selecting a file to be viewed in the normal file browser

Just throw a video file in some random folder in your iPod and select it in RockBox.

I'm gonna be a  :censored: like you:
How does this help him?
It doesn't.
Stop complaining about what he wants to do and help him with what he DOES want to do.

To dslitemodder:
I tried WMV files and they only played audio. My 500mb MOV movie didn't show up,e either. Have you tried getting it to work? I'll try again later. Haven't bothered with the sample movie from the RB site.

even if I sold it to get one I wanted, I would have to pay like an additional $100 just to get one with the same storage space.

@pspkicks do you have a link to the plugin? I would try it but I don't know where to get the plugin. I'm trying to play .mp4 and .m4v movie files.

If ya read my post up there, the mpeg plugin comes built in with RockBox. ;) I'll look into it more later on. I'm doing last minute essays before school starts tomorrow LOL

I couldn't get the rockbox thing to work with me.  oh well, at  least I figured out how to use itunes.  I think I will just get one of those third party programs and have it on my ipod at all times that my when I'm on a computer without itunes I just launch it and go next.

I think I'm going to save up my money though, I just got this wicked idea to make my 60gb sata drive into a portable video player.
it involves using one of these
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10905 (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10905)
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.8822 (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.8822)

and hooking it up to a portable screen and put it all in a single case.  I can find portable screens for like $20-30 at the flea market, so I might be able to pull it off.

Cool idea. And try to find a winamp portable. Make sure you get the ipod plugin too. Much better than iTunes.
