Title: Is this soldering iron suitable for modding
Post by: The Compiler on September 21, 2008, 12:25:09 PM
Hi guys,

just wanted to ask you if this iron is okay:

Technical data:
Primary: 230V WS, 50Hz
Secondary: 12 Volt
Power: 30 W
Setting Range: 200-450°C / 5-10%
It's a soldering station by lux-tools btw.

Is that okay, and which temparature should I use for modding (especially NDS Lite)

Thanks in advance,

Florian

just pick up a radioshack 15W iron, only use 25-30 if you're really experienced and really know what you're doing!  15's better b/c there's a 2-3 second "touch" limit..so the point doesn't come off or fry the chip depending on what's going on

I don't recommend anything less than $30 at all for many many reasons.
I myself use a station that is about $300 - $400.

If you plan on doing a LOT, the go for a station, if not, then don't bother...especially if it's a one time thing!

I can get a 20W for free from a buddy who doesn't need it anymore. 20W should be okay too, shouldn't it?

btw: The manual says: "Don't use the soldering iron for animal experiments". Is my DS an animal?

^^lol^^ "is my ds an animal?"

But yeah I am a pretty new modder myself, and for 15$ I got an iron from radioshack that is dually watted where you cna use 15W or 30W. O and yeah a 20 watt will be ok just make sure when working with your ds do not keep the iron touching the board for mroe then 2 or 3 seconds at a time, I wouldn't even really recomend 3 seconds with a 20 watt, but it might still be ok I guess. 15W is better though for a beginner, or really anyone if you working on boards like that.
