First off, I'm having lots of shorts and troubles with this, and that's why it's 90%. I need to strip it down again and reconnect a few wires here and there, cover some shorts, and then it should be all fine and good.
Here's some work in progress pictures: (Note: I was doing direct connection sound reactive leds wired to the hold switch[hold on=leds off;hold off=leds on])
Hold switch:

First led in (bottom left corner):

All 4 leds in:

Back after all leds in:

***MOST IMPORTANT***
Proof of concept to show I'm not lying ^_^

Problem log:
Lots of shorts, they're wired from the headphone jack to the hold switch for power, and when I have headphones plugged in, I lose hold switch functionality. Depending on how I move the faceplate around, I lose/gain the leds. They randomly shut off, that is. The hdd cable I got in worked at first, and screwed itself again. I'm temporarily using the one from my moms iPod until I have my own working cable. I used bicolor r/b leds for this, as that was all I had left. Sometimes, I lose the leds and one red one comes on. Obviously a short.
So, once I fix the wiring for the headphone jack and hold switch, and fix the shorts in the back, I'm good to go hopefully.
If anyone wants to help out, I NEED A PINOUT OF THE HEADPHONE JACK SO I CAN STOP BLINDSIGHTING IT!

Cool. I hope it's something awesome. Hmm I would do some modding myself, but I seem to be lacking the money. I seriously wonder sometimes where some of the people on this forum get the money for like, 1000 bucks worth of psp parts...

Bump for justice.
Post updated, pics added, project released, etc, etc.
I'm no F00, but I think once I get the kinks out it will be pretty awesome.
-
ic u threw ur day away to mess up a perfect piece of electronics >_<
lol jk :P
looks cool kicks
-
=D thanks chawlie
-
do my ipod next?
-
wow thats awesome. what size leds are those, 1206?
-
Uhhh. I was fairly sure they were 0603 bicolor, but they may be 1206. My other 1206's are a lot bigger though.
-
maybe if you put some clear tape ove the board under the leds ow where you have bare wiring then it will stop the shorts
-
I have electric tape covering all wiring.
I'm gonna work on it later and get some more pics.
Edit:
Kay. So I wired to the ipod connector instead of the jack. Dim leds, and still no sound. Fixed my hold switch, but somehow it's not working? I think my headphone jack/hold switch ribbon is screwed up...I dunno. No sound at all, cuz the leds didn't pulse when music was playing (wired to audio gnd and audio out right + on the connector).
Anyone have a headphone jack pinout? Seems to be the best way for me to go about this right now.
I'll work more on this over the next week as I have time/patience. Can't the next few days.
Any tips or suggestions/comments, post 'em here...

on a male headphone jack the largest segment is always the negative,so on the female it's the one that looks like it would touch the negative of the male when its plugged in
sory for the inuendo in this post,it wasn't on purpose....or was it :O:O:O

Ooh nice. I was thinking of getting a used ipod nano to do this to. I was gonna mess around with wiring before I figured out where to put the wires. I still need a job though, so I bet I won't get fully into modding till next year, when I get a less than minimum wage job
-
It looks pretty nice, What voltage are you getting, cause the LEDs look kinda dim.
-
Okay, I like the wire routing, but may i recommend epoxy/super glue/krazy glue for routing the wires more together, and making it look cleaner..
And of course heatsrhink over un-covered connections, and to keep wires looking neat.
You disabled the ipod hold function right?
They are probably 0805 leds.
Since they don't look 0603, and they certainly aren't 0402 or 0201!
Yeah, CERTAINLY aren't that small. Oh man. Haha.
No, I didn't disable it. I had it working but my whole ribbon cable died on me I think. No sound/hold anymore. Meh, that's why they make replacements :taunt:
And yeah I plan on heatshrinking and crazy glueing the connections...but only once I have everything working haha.

Don't be sorry, I lol'd.
Uhm. Yeah. confusing much? Typed instructions don't really help. Got a picture? XD

Go for it man! It's really not that hard.

Actually, they're brighter in person. And at night they look freakin' awesome!
They might not be as bright as most, but that may be because they're bicolor leds and the blue may not be bright to begin with. I like it though, I don't like overly bright leds.
I'll be working on this when I get the chance. May need a new battery/headphone jack, so this may not be finalized for a bit.
-
Don't hijack.
And mouser.com for leds.
iPod parts. I went to wholesalelaptopbattery.com. Service is great. They sent the wrong part, I emailed them and they sent the right one. It didn't work, so they sent ANOTHER one that worked this time.
-
I'll have another shot at explaining this again,
the one closest to the opening on the connector is the negative,if thats more understandable?
sweed mod btw love it XD
-
Hmmm. I think that's how I had it wired before I went for the ipod connector method. Once I get home tomorrow I'll post a pic of the jack, maybe you guys can show which pins are whast, cuz it's not as simple as it sounds. It't attacked to a ribbon and all. Thanks ryan!
-
If I have time later today I'll be working on this more. If not, then during the week.
I do believe I need a new battery and a new headphone/hold switch ribbon though...
hahaha

That sucks. Anyway, I might be able to convince a friend at school to sell me his 4 gig ipod nano 1st gen for like, 40-50 bucks. If he sells it, I'll probably mess around with it.
-
Have fun with that lol
-
Bump:
Kay guys, if you haven't noticed, there haven't been any updates lately. That's cuz I need a new battery and headphone jack. When I'm able to get those then this can start back up again.
-
post a pic of the headphone jack and I'll see what I can do XD
-
Cool. I'll do that when I get a chance soon, I've been swamped lately.
-
Update guys.
Working HDD cable!
Working headphone jack! (Only one ear, gonna get a new jack/switch anyway)
Gonna get new parts and rewire when I can.
