Title: creating a controller case...
Post by: StealthedHunter on October 16, 2008, 01:54:23 PM
Hey I was wondering how you could sort of mold a controller case. Or how do companies make the different color cases or w/e because I would like to have like 100 cases w/o any insides for sort of cheap. Just wondering if anyone knows how to do this and if they could maybe make a tutorial for it or just show me how to do it or something...

thanks

There's essentially a tut already.
Go down to the making buttons thread or whatever it's called. Do that but with a controller casing.

Cheap? NO.
Will you make money on it? No.
Even sort of cheap? No.

Pretty kickass awesome? YES.

Ok, there are many ways to make a shell, most are super duper expensive.

There is the home brew like Kicks suggested, however in your case of 100 units it would be unpracticle and really expensive and you would need to have some machining tools to do it right.

Another way is to use a Vacum Forming machine, which will be a bit of an initial investment, but probably cheaper than having molds made.  No one will make a tutorial for this cuz if someone was to do this they wouldn't be sharing becuase the unbelievable time it would take to perfect something like this, and obviously there is $$$$ involved as well.

please dont buy a vacu form machine you can make them with parts from home depot i have like 3. basically just find a way to make a flat surface with holes and attach a vacuum machine to it, heat up plastic, form a milk jug or a 2 litre or something, heat it with a paint removing gun (idk what its called the gun u use to scrape paint with u all have them) put it over the controller shell and turn on the vacuum. just google it theres links and plans and crap everywhere just dont buy one there ridiculously easy to make

ive seen a tutorial from makezine on how to make a vacum form machine. Also I wasn't wanting to do this to sell I was just wanting cases to work with for modding and such without having to buy a bunch of controllers for 40$ each  :dntknw:

I also just saw that tutorial for making the buttons and it is like you said extremely expencive and almost I madeswell buy full controlelrs before doing that  :sadno:

So I dont really know how I am goign to do this still I may search google for some other way. Unless you guys think the vacum formign would be the best way. Would they come out looking just like regular controller cases and still fit together and everything?

for a cheaper solution make a roto mold... you will need a small motor and some wood :D

Yup, Rotomold is cool idea for this as well.  Polyethelene is common material for that since melting point is so low.  I am going to try this someday and make some custom Kayaks, since that is the cheapest method for kayak making.

LOL, you wouldn't need all that, that is just the concept.  Could be done with small motor and A propane heating source or something.  Hardest part is making the mold.  You make a smooth nickel mold like in video for controller and the rest is details.

how could you make a nickel mold? Also what kind of small motor? This sounds more expencive then the way they did the buttons... I am not really looking for coolest way I just want the cheapest and easiest way with best results  :yess: I just need these to do some practice modding with so I wont be making any money off of em so I can be putting too much money into em

yeah but I need at least around 10 or 20 of them so 100$ for a case would be rediculous

I dont want custom or anything just plain white cases. Under 20$? I can go on ebay and buy a whole controller for 20$. That is why I wanted to make em myself I thought I could do it cheaper.
