Alright so the other day I made a trip down to walmart to check out what dremels they had. Since I was there, I decided to check if they had soldering irons too. So I go to the closest employee and ask,"Do you have soldering irons?" He looks at me funny and replies,"um... soldering iron.... uh, for clothes?" I think "wtf?" and respond,"Er, no.... for like, electronics and stuff." So he tells me to look in the electronics section. I know it's not gonna be there, but I go over to the cashier and ask them if they have soldering irons. She replies,"Uh... sold....er...ing iron?" I'm thinking ":censored:, not again..." so I go,"Yes Soldering iron." She goes,"No idea."
Epic fail :(
-
Actually, it would be in the electronics section...
BUT, walmart doesn't even carry them. That's why they had no idea.
You need to go to electronics stores for things like that, not a big company store like walmart :taunt:
-
its in electrcal the only have one type not rated for small electronics
-
The only thing that fails here, is going to wal mart for a soldering iron..
I mean, I wouldn't go to sainsburys for one.
:taunt:
-
the wal mart here dont carry them ,and even the local radio shacks only have the 15-30 watt ones and dont even carry flux, now that was an epic fail the day i asked for flux at radio shack and the clerk had no idea what i was speaking of,and when i asked for smd's and they didnt know what they were i lost all respect for the shack,i figured between the 3 employees they had one of them would have the most basic of knowledge of electronics
-
my walmart only had 3 soldering guns, and 2 of em were then crappy cold heats XD
-
You go to a place like Radioshack or Home Depot or a local electronic store, Walmart has alot of stuff, But not everything XD
-
even if walmart had soldering irons
they would suck ass

Lol I figured they wouldn't have one but I figured I'd ask anyway since The Source only had dual wattage soldering irons/15 watt cordless ones, plus their tips are gigantic... :dntknw:

For me to buy any and I mean ANY electronics supplies it's a 42 mile bus drive, from the bus stop (10 euro's bus fare) it's a mile to the shopping center/mall (for the yanks). Then another half mile to maplins, you go into maplins and literally and I mean 100% LITERALLY every single employee their is foreign.I wouldn't mind them being foreign if they actually spoke half decent english!!It's not like I have a strong accent or use too much slang or don't pronounce my syllables, but this is just disgraceful. Thanks to the unhelfulness of the foreign employees (mostly lithuanian),I have to go over to the stand with the maplins catalog on it,I have to spend hours looking at it finding/not finding what I want because I'm not paying 7 euro to buy a catalog, yes,BUY a CATALOG,bring it home and premeditate what I'm going to buy on my next trip.
And don't get me started on the range (or lack thereof),the prices,or the customer service rep's for maplins online purchases or the whole place will go up like hiroshima.

it would be nicer if we could get stuff cheaper, like pay less that 2.99 for 5 0603 leds on llama, and not have to wait 2 days - 2 weeks (dealextreme) to get parts

You can. Mouser.com will get you 5 smd leds for <$1.
-
thnkas kicks. i freaking spent like 12.78 for the LEDs plus shipping ><

Hahaha.
The manager of my localest branch of maplins knows me, So I get catalogs and the occassional part or so free.

LEDs and other small parts are pennies at Mouser, Digikey, and Allied Electronics. Shipping is a problem, but I bet the 'modding' suppy websites will gouge you just as much.
For soldering Irons, dont even bother with anything local. Trust me on this, those hand soldering irons barely cut it for even through-hole work.
http://www.circuitspecialists.com/prod.itml/icOid/7307 (http://www.circuitspecialists.com/prod.itml/icOid/7307) I have had this for 4 years now. I replaced the tip once (my own doing, was using the tip for melting plastic on purpose). The quality is about the same as a Weller, but its better since it comes with a replacement tip and heater in the basic package. Also, the replacement/alternate parts are affordable (Weller replacement tips cost more than this station). I have done alot of work with this puppy and nothing you would have to go out to buy would touch it.
If you poke around the site, you can also have your pick of soldering supplies (hair solder, flux, tip cleaner, yada). The digital station only costs $5 more, or the station with the SMD tips included is $20 more.
Even if you could find all of this stuff at RS or wally, it would cost more in supplies.
