Title: 0603 or 1206 LED's?
Post by: iamoldest on December 05, 2008, 03:57:05 PM
 :help:

So Ive been doing some mods lately (External LED mods 4 psp) and I bought some 0603 LED's.... They're great but soldering them is a PAIN IN THE  :censored:

So... Has anyone used the larger 1206 LED's for psp modding????

They look to be about twice as big... which is a lot when it comes to these little things....

Any posts welcome thanks!

0603's are the best for modding, as they are soo small.

they are a pain, but with practice, it will become easier

1206's wouldn't do good, because of the limited space on the mobo/powerboard for surface mounting, as well as limited space in the buttons, triggers, ect.

I've dealt with 0803's as well, and they are a good compromise between the two, but I still suggest 0603's over any other size.

Just use some twezzers its easier to solder instead of placing the led on a piece of tape and dark do you still want the lm386 chips i have 2 left.

Can you PLEASE speak english?

It hard to understand what you are saying..

DarkShot is right, with a little practice you will be soldering leds in 5 seconds.

Here is a Nic0 video on one of the easiest way to solder them. I use the same method.

I use tweezers that close tightly on them selfs (act the opisite way to normal ones).
I wouldn't go to 1206 they get pretty big, you may get away with 0805 they are slightly bigger.

I use a thing my dad got me, they dont make them anymore, basically Itsa structure made from plexiglass, that has a very sharp pin that goes down with a spring and it has a handle to pull it up, get the led up, pick it up with tweezers, put it in place, and close it down, and whalaa, very easy to solder :D Infact, they are easy to build anyway, I can show pics if you want and when your next at school, pop into your machinery class, or whatever they call it, and build one :D Thats what I will do if mine brakes

And oh yeah, one time I accidently bought 1206 instead of 0603, they are the same brightness, but its double the width and double the height, so its 4 times the size, I did get them working fine, its just that you cant really put them in triggers or buttons or use them for the LED swaps (I just put leds near the speaker area on a clear case and made them sound reactive :D)

In most cases 1206 have higher forward voltage requirements.

And darkshot, it is 0805 ; )
