Any idea of what it could be? I'm guessing it's not the laser because dvds work. Is there a special chip that is used to read games and not dvds? Anyway of getting ahold of one?

From my experience with doing ps3 repairs and mods is the laser assembly has more then 1 laser built into it so some will play dvd's and others will play blue-ray which ever diode burn's out. Most of the systems i delt with had this problem so i just replace the laser assembly and it works like new :tup:

really!? so how can I get a hold of one of these laser assemblies? you think it's a diode that's burnt out? It could be that the blue ray portion stopped working cause by little brothers don't have blue ray movies so they couldn't see if it would play blue ray or not. I asked my dad if he looked into the problem and he said all he read was that it was kind of a common problem and that everyone sent it in to sony to get it fixed. Screw that. I'm a surgeon with a soldering iron. If I can get the part I'm doing it myslef.

You could get the assembly from psxboy.com there the cheapest i have found and you could get the entire laser drive assembly or just the laser assembly
