Ok here's the story. After much researching on the interwebz I found out that sony fixes out of warranty ps3's for a cost of $150 and gives you an 90 day warranty, and if they can't fix it they will send you a replacement model (that has the same capabilities).
I was originally going to buy a as-is 20gb model on ebay and send it in to sony, but I found 60gb model for the SAME price! So I just bought a 60gb as-is ps3 on ebay for $150 with a controllers but with no cables (no big deal, I have an extra computer power cable and extra ps2 av cable). Now all I have to do is wait to get it in and then call up sony and get an out of warranty repair and BOOM 60gb ps3 for $300 +tax and shipping.
So what do you guys think? :drunk:

That's pretty sweet. 60gb versions are the ones that play ps1/ps2 games, right? If not, what's so special about them?

Yes they are. And they also have built in wireless and card slots. This is the one that still has all the features.

Resistance 2 is a must if you like FPS games, i love that game loads. Also nice one on the 60gb, definately still the best with all the features it has, i've had it since day one of European release and it is still running strong, definately a good choice there.

I don't know, nor do I care. As long as it was a 60gb model I don't need to worry. Once I send it to sony it's their problem :taunt:. If they can't fix it they will send me a replacement 60gb model. And it was $100 cheaper then the other broken ones on ebay.

sorry to burst your bubble but sony cant send you a replacement 60gig model as they no longer make them... if they cant fix it you may be screwed in the backwards compatible sense...

Sorry to burst yours. I talked to THREE different people and they all said I would get a replacement that CAN still play ps2 games. I mentioned and that they didn't dodge the question either.

did you talk to sony about this? i called them about it ( i had the same idea) and they said that they couldnt send a 60gb model back to me if they cant fix it. call them and ask them though, the policy may have changed since nov. 21st. if they will send you a good one then thats great ^_^ but i just thought i would let you know what they told me so you dont get your hopes up >.<

thanks for your concern. Yeah I bought the ps3 like 2 days ago and I called them up 3 different times and talked to 3 different people and they all said they would send a replacement 60gb model that COULD play ps2 games. I specifically brought up the fact that the 60gb could play ps2 games and if they couldn't fix it I would still want a 60gb that could still play ps2 games, they ALL send I would get back a 60gb ps3 that could still play ps2 games no matter what happened.
So I don't think I will have a problem with sony, generally sony has super customer service and they actually know what they are talking about.

I don't think that you need a warranty sticker on it still (but call to make sure!) Yeah you just call their customer service number and tell them you need them to fix your ps3.

UPDATE!!! I'VE GOT MORE GOOD NEWS!
Ok so I talked to my brother today (he works with cars and has a lot of friends) and I asked him if he knows anybody who paints cars. He says he has a friend who can paint my ps3 white for FREE! And on top of that I found a place that repairs ps3s for $100 with a 30 day warranty (if they can't fix it they will just give it back to me and I don't spend anything). So how about that? I just got a white ps3 for $250-300 (if I have to send it to sony). That's waaaaaaaaaay less then what it costs to get a 40gb white ps3 that CAN'T play ps2 games :hifive:

BUMP AND UPDATE!
Okay I got the ps3 in today and I did some testing on it. It turned on and worked! (Mostly) It turns on and lets you browse the menu and play videos off of memory card/hard drive. It does NOT however read any discs. And it won't eject them either. But other then then it works.
I'm going to take it to the pawn shop tomorrow and see if they can fix it within a couple of hours. They usually charge about $100 to fix bad drives. If they can fix it I will buy a extra controller from them while I'm at it. I'll also see if he will let me take the case while he's fixing it so I can get it painted. So tomorrow I might have a fully working ps3! I'll post pics when I get it all working and painted.

I didn't even think it would turn on let alone watch movies. normally it would cost me $250 to buy a similar one on ebay.

Ok after much calling and talking to sony (total nightmare with my credit card) I finally got the box to be shipped to me. In a couple of weeks I should have my ps3 in time for my birthday! I also bought assassin's creed for $10 off of my friend so I should have something to play when I get my ps3 back. I went to gamestop and found a memory card adaptor for $10 so I got that too. I'm all set to go, all I have to do is wait for sony to fix my ps3 and I'm golden! Btw it's costing me $160.63 (tax included) to fix my ps3, add that to the intial cost to buy it in the first place $165.53 (with shipping) and you get a total of 326.16! Way cheaper then the store at $400 +tax, so about $432 with tax as opposed to $326.16!

i had mine replaced 2 times. but it was still in the 90 day warrenty. they wont send you a brand new ps3. though if you complain, they can give you a new full body housing. they will fix or repair your ps3 from salvaged parts.

For the controller? or the ps3? Maybe the controller, but not the ps3 (at least not until the 90 day warranty is up)

In all seriousness though, I have no intention of purchasing a ps3, I had a 60gb release model, I sold it month or two ago for £360, and now I almost have a cnc machine.

Nope, it's not like that at all, my friend's done the exact same thing and he got sent a literally brand new one. Despite the fact that it's refurbished, it is still as if it were new.

That's excatly what mine had, but I was lazy and I had extra cash laying around so I sent it to sony :P

No the guys COULD fix it BUT I would have to wait 2-3 weeks AND pay $160. I didn't trust them either, they left broken consoles in the middle of the floor in plain sight in a bad neighborhood. I decided to go the safe route.

I got my ps3! I picked it up at the ups station at 10:00 am. I'll post pics later I'm too busy playing :psp:
EDIT: I also got my photofast adaptor for my psp today! Yea for 16gb's :#1:
