Hey guys,
I've FINALLY finished the controller mods. The bottom right LED gave me A LOT of trouble (stupid pads/traces)
Here's a few pictures:

Looks sweet guys!

SWEET! nice job man. You going to swap the LED's as well ?
sadly no my hands arent steady enough for that
ill leave that to people who have patience like you
-
LOL me? have patience. I destroyed my iron tip by stabbing it into concrete the first time when I tried. Then I ripped the pad of the player 4 led and some of the trace. I was swearing for 25 minutes. I have to admit it is some of the dodgiest soldering I have EVER done. But hey, no one can see the inside :P.
-
Lol stabbing concrete with a soldering iron isn't the best idea  I started practicing soldering on an old HDD, then an old stick of RAM, and then I went on to practice on my psp. It took me a while to get LED swaps too, but I find that a little practice and technique is all it takes. Patience is definitely mandatory here though... I spent well over an hour and i still failed, but I didn't give up and eventaully I got it. Next time you have trouble, just stop, and take a break... Ask AM too, lots of helpful people here :yess:
-
I cam close to ripping the controller apart because of the pad and trace
-
well no matter you still did it, i murdered a controller trying to desolder the analog stick LOL
so im not going to try the leds they so small
-
Led swapping is extremely easy, you just need to have patience and a steady hand (or tools to hold everything and make it easier lol)
-
Looks good. You should put a white battery pack and paint the bottom of the crontroller (the part thats grey) white.
-
I got the hang of it now. Just took a lil bit of practice. I did my other controller but I kinda mixed it up. 1st and 4th player are blue and 2nd and 3rd are green and I swapped the analog sticks with the orig xbox controller ones...I'm still planning to light up the dome on that one.
-
hey i just finished my chatpad and it looks ok - not as good as that but ok my problem with it is it has some small cracks in the paint that apeared as it dried - do you know why that is or could it be with it been really cold here at the minute
-
you could get paint thinner and wipe it off?
-
nah to much hassle lol i was just wondering if anyone had any idea why so that next time i can stop it from happening lol.
-
Post some pics, then we can get a better idea of your problem.
-
I think it's just that since it's so cold, the paint doesn't apply evenly. Also, since it's cold it might cause it to crack while it's drying too. This is why I'm not painting in the winter. Too much hassle. Did it crack after u started using it or right after it dried?
-
well i had the paint at room temprature but my parents dont want me to spray inside so i took it into the garage to spray with the room temp paint and i then let it dry outside till it wasnt wet but just tacky and then brought it inside - i will get pictures later my dads family is over at the moment
-
During the PC modding days, alot of people used vinyl dye rather than regular paint for plastic items. Paint never adheres well to plastic. I believe vinyl dye can be found in most auto parts stores.
-
It will adhere well if you do some good prep work: sand it smooth, and prime it nicely
-
Yeah, but all paint EVENTUALLY wears away. Vinyl die is better, but I reckon just spray painting is simpler...
-
Robin I think I figured out your problem - you said that you tried drying it outside first then inside, and I read that paint cracks if there are rapid changes of temperature while drying. I figure if you moved it from outside to in, it'd be like a difference of a good 30 degrees.
-
yeh it was like -4c outside and about 20-25c inside
