Title: USB Charge Problem
Post by: azhockey on February 01, 2009, 10:39:41 AM
Ok, so I just finished doing a clear case, cutting the UMD door, and doing a USB charge mod on my phat. But I
have a problem, I did the solderless USB mod because I really dont trust myself with a hot iron next to my mb.
Now it works... but only with the UMD door open  . I guess it's the pressure but how do I fix it? It's
a pain.

Thx

PS Just figured out it turns off my entire USB connection not just charging.

Make sure the wires are wrapped tight around where they're supposed to be.

The best thing to do for this mod would be to solder the wire.

Also, make sure the wire is as close to the mobo as possible.

Ok it is a short but not to the umd cage. I made that tutorial and I had the same problem just before I made the tutorial. The wire should only touch the one pin that is specified in the tutorial. You also have to rout the wire like I have it in the tutorial. Otherwise the little hook that keeps the umd door closed will put pressure on the wire. This causes the wire to touch more than one wire on the USB. That will both disable the USB charging and the pc connection. Just wrap the wire tighter and thin it if needed to make it only touch one pin. Also re-rout it somthing like I have it in the tutorial. Hope this helped. Let me know if you have any other problems because I know this method works and works prefectly if done correctly. I still have my psp with this method and it works perfectly.

Thanks everyone! I rewired it with a smaller wire and wrapped it tighter and it works great!  :victory:
Up next LED Triggers (which I will have to use a soldering iron for  :eyebrow:) I'll post results of that later... Thx again!

I can almost guarantee thats what it was. If you look closely the UMD cage has to "prong" like things that go right where many people route their USB charge wires. Thats why it only worked when it was open.

But its good you got it working. Also learn to solder on old electronics like ram chips and old mobos.
Good luck  :victory:

I use a 15 watt radioshack i got for 10$. Works good as any other iron ive had. (Couple wellers along the way but i like my radioshack the most :D)

Just don't get anything over 30 watt unless you have plenty of skill at soldering. For psp work, 30 is even pushing it for most people.

I got 25W weller, original tip somewhere lost and i'm using some random thick tip sharpened thin with file (right word?)

and i think its pretty good for psp work even if im not so skilled.

Weller FTW I have a 12w Weller, an OLD i think 30-60w Weller,  and a 30 Watt radio shack iron which the tip holster is so bad it now wiggles these are deffinatly inferrior products and i had a 15w also from Radio Shack Which sparked on me one day and died.

i would HIGHLY recommend the 12w pencil weller for tight work like on the PSP though
