Title: Woo New Laptop.
Post by: Rory on February 11, 2009, 01:48:50 AM
Well, it's a netbook but hey.

Advent 4211 (UK build of the MSI Wind U100)

Intel Atom 1.6 GHz
2GB RAM (Upgraded from the onboard 1 GB)
250 Gig Hard Drive (Upgraded from 80 Gig)
Windows 7 Beta (Got sick of XP)

I might Dual-boot with OSX. Just to play with and get to know it.
It was hard enough watching £170 go, let alone £800 :P.

Its actually a pretty good laptop. It's mainly used for college work. It's like uber light XD.

OS X is pretty easy to install (I have medion Akoya Mini, Slightly modified MSI Wind). Use msiwindosx.iso for install, runs very nicely. Upgrade your BIOS to the latest and set the DOC to 24%, then hold Fn+F19 to hit turbo-mode (on ac). That's nearly 2 GHz!

I installed via Kalyway. Forgot to enable my graphic driver and now the screen res is screwed :(

Picks it up as 800 - 600, so I got a great big black line down the right hand side of the screen, where would I get that ISO?

My MSN is in my AM profile ;)

There is a GMA 950 driver http://forums.msiwind.net/osx-software/proof-concept-gma950-update-safe-drivers-t6785.html (http://forums.msiwind.net/osx-software/proof-concept-gma950-update-safe-drivers-t6785.html)

nice build ,but probably the only downside is the Atom proccesor and lack of dedicated graphics card, other than that it looks like a great machine though!

I HAD everything working. 10.5.2, update to 10.5.3 went fine, then to 10.5.4, installed all of the drivers. Graphics, sound, wifi, network. The lot. Working perfectly.

THEN. Apple update.
All I got after that was a kernal panic at boot. Try reinstall everything from scratch. Get 10.5.2 installed. Hangs during the 10.5.3 update.

It makes me sad :(.

Windows 7 is working surprisingly well. I'm not going back to Vista. I got rid of all the crappy "Send feedback" and the watermark on the desktop. Also deactivated the time nuke. Now, I'm not going back to Vista. It just runs so quick, user friendly etc. I think MS has closed the download link. If you PM me if you want it and the serial key (There are only 5 keys which EVERYONE uses so no worries about duplicate keys deactivating and shiz).

But yeah, its kick ass. Need a new battery, this only lasts 2 hours. I'm looking at getting one more in the 6-7 hour range.

I'm going to Tri-Boot, Win7, OSX and Ubuntu. Wiping my Hard drive first though. Win7 Bootloader hates anything but its self.
I upgraded the Hard Drive to 250 gig. 80 for each OS? :P

wow, i didn't know that there was a resource hack for the time limit. So how feature complete is the os. I mean is the new media centre thing working ? Get one of those extended six cell batteries, you'll easily get 6 hours of battery life :)
