is there any way that i can make a windows xp OS disk so i can do a clean install? i bought this lappy i am using and i want to basically make it new (wipe the HDD completely and reinstall windows xp) so can i do this? i have the key on my lappy (the sticker thingy) so can i do it legally? (if not then just reply with a simple no)
-
It should not be a problem if you have the disk
-
if you have the disk then it's no problem just install it again. oh and if your lookin' for the actual ISO image then just google it your bound to find it.
-
thats the problem... no disk... got it from a friend and she was horrible with it... the j key is missing (to get it to type i have to press it really hard for it to work >.< ) is it legal to get the ISO?
-
No. But any windows xp disk will work as long as you use the computers licens. (and in therory you can find an ISO of xp and make a disk of it, but just like making an ISO of any other peice of software that you do not own it's not legal) so use the disk from a friends computer or one of yours.
But if the computer did not originaly come with a restore disk there should be a restore partition on the hdd. As long as that has not been corupted by a virus or any thing you shouldbe fine
-
i have the restore partition but idk how i would use it. would i burn that partition to a cd or would i do a wipe of the windows partition and boot from the restore?
-
Then most likely when you boot up he pc beofre he logo comes press f10 and keep pressing it until the screen changes and says recovery mode, But you should just do what i did completly go to ubuntu its faster no viruses its just better. Well if what i said dosent work reply back and i will help. Some computers have diffrent keys that need to be pressed to work but mine was f10.
-
meh... i should know this stuff... but idk...
ok why is ubuntu better? i need more than faster and no viruses to switch to a new OS
-
sorry im sorta lost with what you said but ubuntu is sweet i love it im never going back to windows. Linux has no registery to so no more regstery cleaning. It is also noob friendly its simple to install a guy who has never used a computer in their life would be able to install it. Also using it is simple. It is free to you dont have to have a regisration key.
-
i dont have the hardware to run it atm... 243mb ram... idk how the hell that happened but... meh
-
Only bad thing is you can have some driver issues with linux
-
It will run perfectly fine with 256mb ram (They don't....make 243mb sticks)
Ubuntu is a linux OS. You're not going to be able to use any of your Windows programs with it.
-
i know both of those... which is why i dont know how the hell 243mb is showing up when i check my ram... and why i am skeptical to go to linux
-
well they make a cople of linux distros that supports computers with low ram and hdd space.
-
meh... i know a lot about windows... idk if i want to change to linux now...
-
Oh ok i see. Well did you try the F10 thing yet?
-
no i am getting ready to do that now >.<
-
Oh ok well tell me what happens
-
it says i need to reinstal the backup disk... which i dont have >.<
-
what!!! it shouldn't what were the options it listed?
-
the popup covered them before i could see them... it was asking for recovery disk one...
-
oh well then ur only choices are stay how you are now or get linux
-
>.< can i use someone elses xp disk with my key?
-
Dude. Just download the ISO of an XP disk and reinstall, then use your LEGIT key.
Yes, you can use someone else's disk.
You're fine.
-
ok...
-
Down loading an ISO of an os is NOT legal
ISO are olny legal if you own the disk your copying
-
@_@ confused >.<
-
Well I'm not trying to push things here, but if you really want to use a back up again I'm not trying to push you go ahead and burn the ISO image or like was suggested is to restore to factory setting with system restore.
-
An ISO is ok if you own the disk you are making an image of, and only if it is for your own personal back up use.
To find a disk image of an os on line and to down load it is software piracy
-
Not Unless your Order a Free Restore CD from The Manufacter. HP offers There System Restore Disks on the site. But you Need the Model number Service Tag numbers...ect If its Not HP Im sure other Companys offer it.
-
He has the OS and a legit key. You're paying for the KEY when you buy an OS, essentially.
There should be no problem with this.
-
its a gateway... i will check
