Title: Input for some upcoming mods
Post by: jakxxx on March 30, 2009, 06:37:30 PM
I would like to do a led reactive mod and add a couple of speakers.  My questions are:

Reactive leds - which gives better results the lm386 or the npn 2n2222

Leds in general - i find the 0603's are extremely tiny in my big clumsy fingers.  would it hurt to go bigger?  what about traditional bulb style as opposed to SMD's, any reason not to use these?

Speaker mods - I have 2 speakers from an old laptop.  they are 1 watt about an 1.25 inches wide and 3/8 of an inch thick.  Will they work?  If so would I be able to hook up both to the lm386 if I go that route?

How many speaker and LED outputs are there on the lm386?

Leds:
The 2n2222 will be more sound reactive, but not as bright without music.

General Led's:
Well, you're going to have to go with something small. Bulb LED's are pretty much not going to work, because they won't fit in the trigger.

Speaker:
That should be fine, only if you plan to remove the umd drive. 3/8 of an inch is pretty thick

Output's:
As many as your heart desires, within logical reason, though.

Thanks for the reply.  I have already removed the umd and now I getting ready to add a sd card socket.  Should I go with the lm386 so that I can hook up the leds and the new speakers to it alone or should I go with multiple power sources from the board and the transistors?

1 lm386 should work fine.

Also may I add that bulbs make a lot of heat, and they also use ALOT more power

Instead of 0603 leds try using 1206
