Title: Psu/Hdd problem PLZ HELP ASAP
Post by: socomhacker239 on April 13, 2009, 02:39:33 PM
well i had bought a 1 terrabyte serial from bestbuy i went home plugged it in as a master and to my suprise the computer turned on for like 2 seconds then shutoff  and everytime it turned on i would have to unplug the computer for like 5 minutes or else it wouldnt turn on. then i tried my original hdd it worked perfectly its an old 20gb ide. i thought it was the hdd so i took it back and went home and put everything back together and turned it on and the psu had failed. so i bought a new psu. so my question is would the 1 tb work now and i have a compaq presiario s6000cl would the computer read the whole tb.

Why didn't you just say SATA? That's what they're called lol.

Are you sure your computer FULLY supports SATA? It's an old computer. Check the BIOS settings also, there might be something you'd need to change.
I remember on an old HP desktop I had, there was a setting that told me the max my computer could read. See if that kind of setting is in your BIOS.

I'd think an old computer that still used IDE wouldn't read near 1tb...but it's possible.

Oh sorry i couldn't remember the correct word so i just said serial. But yea my computer uses ide hdds but i also have sata connections.i checked my bios for that  and i didn't see anything. The guy at bestbuy told me if my computer was newer then 2003 i shouldn't have a problem with it reading the whole hdd size.

He's right, too. Hmm. That's a really strange problem.

What was the old PSU wattage and what's the new wattage?

It could be as simple as not having enough power to power everything and the new harddrive.

sorry it took so long to reply i double checked my bios and my old psu wattage was 135 and my new one is 200. I knew the problem last time was the psu was dieing but now that i have a new one do you think i will have problems installing a 1 tb sata?

Personally I think it might have been a power issue.

My advice is pick up the HDD again, test it out, and if it doesn't work you can just return it like you did with the first one.

it shouldn't just install an OS and off you go

I don't see why it would.
I really think it was just a power issue, because it would crash a few seconds in which is when the hdd gets loaded (after BIOS)[I think).
it shouldn't just install an OS and off you go
It had NOTHING to do with that.

If it doesn't work this next time, I'm all out of ideas though. There should be no reason it wasn't working(apart from power being a major, logical, problem)

it should give him a problem, he should just install an OS and hes done. it should work.

well thanks but i knew the power supply was the reason it didn't even turn on i posted that part then i figured out the power supply was dead and just left that part their but what i wanted to know was if i tried again would my computer even recognize the 1 terrabyte because it was so old. I knew what you were talking about sniper i wasn't confused.

Also make sure your bois is up to date. Some old bois versions may not recognize a big harddrive and it may "cap" your size for example to 500gb
