Title: ....Ah crap......
Post by: Max_Kreeger on April 14, 2009, 10:52:28 AM
Hey guys,

It was bound to happen, sooner or later something on my 360 was going to fail....and guess what failed....my powerbrick. I noticed it had a red light. I tried turning on my 360 and it didn't work...so I unplugged the cable to the brick and plugged it back in and it gave me a stand by light....I haven't turned it on again coz its 1:44AM and I have the 12V mod so its too noisy. I'll try turn it on again when everyone's up. But I have a feeling something may be shorting at the 12V spot where I have hooked up a fan. Either that or it may be a fault like it says on the brick. Anyone got any ideas, or suggestions of what to do or what might be the problem ?

Thank you
Max

damnit! well something was bound to happen eventually, it always does.

Ok so welcome to PSU trouble shooting 101. First thing you need to do is figure out if it is your PSU or you Console that is giving you trouble.  start by testing your PSU on another console or by testing another PSU on your console.  From that you should be able to tell if it is the PSU or the console causing the problem.

Next, one by one unhook the mods you did or the fans to make sure they arent overdrawing the PSU.(console will run for a little while without fans just dont keep it on any longer then you have to.)

What size PSU is it? if it is 175W you may want to look into getting a 203W if you are indeed over drawing teh supply(which I doubt, but is possible)

Well I turned it on today and it was all working fine....I thought it might be a bad connection and shook the brick while in standby to see if it would happen again..but nothing. I guess its a one time thing....hopefully it doesn't catch on fire...

hmm, do you think it got too hot? was it well ventilated or shoved in some dark crevas? I'd keep an eye on it.

i have a question what is the 12v mod

Hooking your stock fans onto 12v so they spin faster and suck more air out. Heres a tut:

There is also a 12v spot where you can hook extra stuff to. Like more fans :P Heres a pic:

The 12v spot is the pins right under where you plug in the power cable. Heres a closer pic:

Umm its just sitting on the ground (wood) there's nothing else around it that would add heat to it. But it is dusty and its hooked up to a power surge protector and so is my computer and its got a 850W PSU. don't know if that makes a difference but yeah...

Thanks again
Max

yah just take some canned air and dust that puppy out. No need to take it apart just hit it with compressed air and try to get the bunnies out :winker:
