i want to mod my xbox with a modchip or soft mod and don't no witch 1 to do. What id better hord or soft mod? I want to install linux and play back up game on it and surf the web with it.

it would really depend on which you could get the supplies for easier/ want to get.

Can i turn the soft mod off so i can go on live or do i need a modchip to do that?

I'm PRETTY sure you can turn off live. I'm not 100% sure though.

i'm not exactly sure about the softmod either.
i dont't think you can.

i do know that for the v1.0 you can flash half of the bios with custom and leave the other stock.  you would just need a switch to use the different bioses.

as far as hard mods, you can definitely turn them on/off.
duox2 chips are cheap and reliable.  you would just need to turn on the xbox with either the power button or eject button to turn it on/off
