Title: my old comp...
Post by: Barnsey on May 29, 2009, 07:42:13 AM
i just plugged in my old computer which is about 4 years old
i had 75gb of free space on it now i only got 8
i deleted almost everything, uninstalled pretty much everything, ran a disk defragmenter and disk cleanup and still only 14gb
any ideas on how to free up some space?

thanks

Back up only important files on a flash drive or cd then reinstall the OS. That's what I always do, not for your particular problem but it should work

Well, you see, you...
...put the disk in and install.

ah kicks, stop being so sarcastic with new members !

Dude, when the computer boots up , enter the bios and make sure that the first boot setting is set to your dvd/cd drive.

Then restart your computer and quickly put in your windows/whatever os you are using disk.
Now just keep pressing whatever key it asks you... finally when it gets to the point, format and continue installation, do that and you will have a new os installation with hopefully all that disk space recovered.

Feel free to ask anything else you want or didnt understand..........

And actaully to simplify things for you just put your disk in before you turn off the computer, then whenever you start it just enter the boot menu, typicallly F12. Then select your cd drive. Then if it says press any key to boot from cd, press any key.  Then from there it should be pretty simple. If you need anything you can also pm me.

make sure he understands the concept of iso burning? thats what messed me up with my linux dual boot. cuz you can't just download an iso and burn it, theres a certain way you have to do it. use infrarecorder. its easy and free

i didn't discuss windows downloads... only infra recorder and iso burning. both of which are legal. but my bad i guess... also, stupid of me to even say this since it's probly wrong but wouldn't resizing a partition cause this...? maybe...? like, say you use an ubuntu livecd and whatever that tool is called and make your windows partition smaller.

installing an os is pretty straightforward, theres not a whole lot of things that can go wrong, and im pretty sure if something does happen it will only mess with the data on the harddrive, like you interrupt the installation and only half of the files are copied or whatever. then you would probly just have to restart the installation. (i would suggest you at least download the ethernet driver you need before you start installing, and burn it to a cd or put it on a jump drive or something. that can be a huge pain if you don't have another pc to use.)

if you plan to do any real gaming at all i would go with windows. in my opinion gaming on linux just isn't going to happen. wine or whatever just isnt that great from what i've heard.

i think theres a way to install osx, but im not exactly sure its legal and ive heard theres a lot of hardware issues. google is your friend for that one.

and i didnt mean the livecd itself, i meant the gnome partition editor that can be used from the ubuntu livecd. maybe he used it and forgot...?
