Title: work log for my spurgurgle xbox 360 controller
Post by: 1god1king on December 08, 2009, 07:17:41 PM
Ok with a suggestion by  spurgurgle  blessing  I have taken on what I believe to be the Greatest controller mod ever :)

All creditt goes to him Obviously and in no way am I trying to take any of it . Because of the distance between us , I am unable to have him do it for me so with his blessing and help am doing it my self changing a few things along the way . I am simply posting the steps so that others may follow and do the mod  themselves as well all credit goes to
spurgurgle

now with that said and with spurgurgle  help I am in the process of doing the mod here is what I have so far .

NOTE
You will need 2 controllers for this mod I suggest if you can buy a as is controller off of ebay pretty cheap as when we are done the only usable thing will be board if you have to use a working one I guess you could sell board on ebay .

note
when removing trigger only remove the left trigger so that we can unsoldier the joystick and resoldier are trace wires unless you plan on painting them

D-pad prep
I have done a remix to the D-pad portion listed below

blueprint of D-pad
1. circular breadboard from radio shack approx 1 inch if you dont have you can round a breadboard out in this diameter
2. existing  D-pad guts
3 7mm heighttactical switches
3 spring taking from rc shock and cut to size check ebay for team losi shock springs
3.power button from xbox 360 faceplate

D-pad rational
1.spring was added for spring lol :) and D-pad adjustment
2. will replace round screw with flat head screw use to adjust grey D-pad to the tactical

I will be returning to this as it needs to be cut to height I ask spurgurgle  and he said his was about 15/17mm Mines may be different as with the screw I can adjust

Diagram of D-pad
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi89.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fk220%2F1god1king%2Fphoto4.jpg&hash=31b420e52007a1639de7287b8760e4fafa7ad330)

Step 1
Once you have open and remove shell from controller flip over and remove D-pad mechanism there will be 2 screws and 2 clips that you need to push in to remove , see photo #1
once remove set aside as we will be using this shell in the shell mod portion as you can see i have already removed the right trigger portion of the shell which will be done in the shell mod portion

step 2
In photo#2 the circular part of the D-pad needs to be shaved as shown in photo just remove the raised portion
so that it will fit in the old joystick sleeve  photo#3 . Keep sleeve to use as stability for the breadboard and D-pad file down any rough edges

step 3 flip D-pad mechanism so that the 2 large holes are down and you are looking at the bottom. Now remove the tip so that it is flat so you can drill .  see photo#4now you will need to drill a hole in the bottom of the D-pad  this can be difficult but possible as there is not a lot of material use a bit smaller than the  flat head screw you plan to use

photo #1

Now breadboard and Tactical switch prep

Now with are 1 inch diameter breadboard and tac switch

step 1
use photo below for reference
align switches so that they are evenly apart you may need to adjust the legs so that they line up with holes bend legs back to secure for later when we soldier wires

step2
Once tac's switches are in drill a hole in the center of the breadboard  will be using a washer to protect the breadboard  once done processed to assembly

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi89.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fk220%2F1god1king%2Fphoto15-1.jpg&hash=b425ac52744ca191f5dc31237d861174261067ad)

D-pad assembly note once you have assembled set aside as we will come back to this to cut the hieght and add power button D-pad top

Power button D-pad prep
comining soon

Modding the controller shell
1. 5/8 hole saw used to cut out right controller socket see photo#1A
once removed sand excess until it looks like photo # 1.
2. file to file down d-pad section and removed left controller section
file smooth once you reach this poin the inner excess plastic come right out. as shown in photo #2 also take you time testing to see if pieces fit . remember
easier to remove more than to add more .
3.photo #3 set power button that we are using for the new d-pad as shown in photo with a pencil out line how much more needs to be removed it is not much so take your time trying so often to see you that you have removed the required amount
4. resin and hardener
5. sand paper 80 and 100

Big up to SYSTEM as suggested by spurgurgle  I am using his tutorial Redesigning the 360 Controller Tutorial link below. Here are my photos of what I have done so far . Not to good with chemical so that should be fun :)

wel will update

update

Ok I was trying to come up with a different solution for the fiberglasss and resin mix

1. guerrilla glue
2. liquid nails
3. crazy glue

I was unsure of how this would sand so I realized that SYSTEM way was the best
so I went out and got a fiber glass kit

man that fiber cloth is a :censored: to work with so I just use the resin and hardener
so if your like me and dont want to bother with the fiber cloth just get a tube of resin and hardener and save a little money . here photo

Yeah this is a pro job.  I am heavily considering doing a take off of this and maybe modding it further.  Although spurgurgle kinda took it where I would probably have taken it with the awesome color coded player leds.

Here are some links to high quality pics and scans so that you can just edit them in paint or whatever...

Just go to the Controller Modification section and look at the high res scans of the different controllers.

Also, thanks for the tuts!

hi 1god1king i've just noticed its a matrix type controller your using for this......

it doesnt really make to much difference but you may find it easier to use a cg type controller as cg is common ground . meaning all the ground can be shared which can minimse wiring a little. such as only 1 ground to all of the dpad buttons where as on a matrix u'll need all 4 ground and all 4 +.

and the same on a cg for the anolog just share 1 ground for x axis y axis and the click down tactile.........

this last photo obviously is the trigger soldiered back make sure you fit it correct there is a hole in the trigger and a hole in the controller board make sure it is in will cause you a problem later if not when putting it back together

Just wondering, is there a tutorial for this?

no hippie here is not a specific tut for this type of mod... when i did it i used several tuts and techniques to complete my mod.... and im helping king out when and where i can...

but 1 of the reasons i asked him to put this into a complete worklog is so i can be used as a form of tut for modders in the future,.....

so if you wait for him to finish this. it should show you what he's done step by step.

also 1god1king its looking good so far....
hows the case turned out?????

Looking great dude, and thanks for the pictures along the way!

But concerning the analog stick positioning, SYSTEM and you moved the left analog stick down, but since I have long thumbs it makes a lot more sense to move the right stick up, like this:
https://www.acidmods.com/forum/index.php?topic=19911.0 (https://www.acidmods.com/forum/index.php?topic=19911.0)

Yes, I'd need to get used to aiming with the new position of the right analog stick, but both thumbs would have room to reach and won't collide if they both point towards the guide button.

Does anyone have anything to say before I move the right analog stick up to where the abxy buttons are?

lol  also can take the buttons and move them next to the d-pad with another d-pad assembly instead of the buttons

Lol why are you never going to do this again.  If this was your first mod then congrats to you for being brave.  You are really good at this if you can pull this off without much xp.  Don't get discouraged.  Thanks for the worklog though.  What did you use to get the dpad at the perfect height?  What kind of spring is that and how did you get the sensitivity right.
Also, are those long tact. switches?  What length?

Thanks but

first this is  spurgurgle mod hence work log for my spurgurgle xbox 360 controller :) just the distance between us doesnt permit him to do it for me and even then i know why you cant put a price tag on it but he is helping along  the wAY

just want to make that clear :)

THE spring is a spring from a losi mini t shock [rc car] cut to height  and basically gives you the spring back
spurgurgle use 7mm .tact. switches so that's what i used

I had plan on cutting the high of the d-pad  on Monday . i am not going to attach it to the controller mobo
but install it in the controller shaft and poxy it at the bottom run the wires out . once i do that will post pictures .

going great godking..... fitting a tilt board aswell now thats crazy modding.......

and yeah i installed my dpad in my case, aswelll.
well what i did was wire the extra wires to the d-pad contacts had them coming out (longer then needed) then wired up the new anolog and stuck it in place hopeing none of the dpad wire's had com lose..... then when i open or close this controller up its just a case of soldering or de-soldering the 5 wires for my d-pad and the 5 wires for the d-pad lights...........all to contacts on the bottom of the breadboard dpad.......

which im quite glad i did cos it means a can take the contoller apart...... which i probilly will be doing soon as im not so happy with the paint job now..... there is a chip on it...... i dropped it onto a nice hard tile floor..... but  it all held up apart from the paint....... dam paint....
