Title: what resistor to use
Post by: atomicareprise on December 19, 2009, 05:19:40 AM
hey guys...before anything let me be the first to greet all of you guys an advance merry christmas...

now my question is that i'm wonderin' what resistor should i use if my led was powered by a 12v...

the led i'm using is from a motorcycle...and it has 12v supply..

now i want to hook it up using a 3.6v

TIA :drunk:

What voltage does it require?.......

well the led is from a motorcycle and led was supplied by a 12v battery..

now i want to use the led using a power supply of 3.6v...

is that possible?

I doubt that the LED can use a 12v power source without there being a resistor already.  The standard voltage for a white and blue led are about 3.3v to 3.6v so find out the required minimum voltage as well as the mA required and plug it into a resistor calculator.

i'll upload a pic later...its a 3mm led..i dont see a motorcycle that have a power source lower than 12v..

maybe the led itself has resistors built in...maybe..

where exactly did this come from on a motorcycle?  If it was from a lamp on the front or something I'm sure that it connects to a circuit board somewhere where the voltage is either lowered or there is a resistor.  Also, what kind of power supply are you hooking it up to?

well the led is actually bought separately for the accessories for the motorcycle...

the led is hook up to a 12v battery..

What color is it?  If you can find the info on the package see what voltage it needs at a minimum to work and what mA it takes.  honestly, if it is just a standard 3mm led  just go by the standard guidelines...   For white, it's from 3.3v to 3.6v.  Blue is like 2.5v to like 3.0v.  This is all from memory.  I would look them up or try to find it out by doing some experiments with your voltmeter.  When guessing just going with the higher resistor value.

i'll do that buddy..

thanks

BTW, I'm going to be skiing all day from here on until sunday so I can only really respond in the afternoon...
