Title: Work Log: Pheonix
Post by: jrfhoutx on December 19, 2009, 11:30:48 PM
Ok, so I've had this box for a little while now, and I was planning on modding it, but then my dvd player crapped out on me so one 360 was relegated to DVD player duty and this one was pressed into use for game play (games share a dual input setup on my monitor). well I finally got a new DVD player and a ton of time on my hands, so the modding has begun and this is gonna be the work log for it...

Right now I'm calling this project 'Pheonix' (thou shalt spell pheonix p-h-e-o-n-i-x, not p-h-o-e-n-i-x, regardless of what the Oxford English Dictionary tells you... sorry for the tangent...), might change in the future, who knows, but anyway... I'm not gonna lay out all my plans for this one and tell you what all is gonna get done, cause I don't really know. I'm just going with the flow of it and planning out each step as I take it.

This belonged to a former co-worker and it went RROD, so first was a x-clamp fix. that was a while ago, so I don't really have any photos of that process but doesn't matter cause photos of that fix are all over the place so I'll start with the ROL mods so far...

System ROL LED replacement... you can see I chose to keep the RROD function with two sets of LEDs
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs141%2FjrfhoutxAM%2FXbox360%2F100_0629.jpg&hash=63da2421af19aa5509709eed12f2e8f4342439ab)

System ROL w/Controller 1
MOV00272.3GP (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eF3uBXjH5ps#normal)

Masking out and marking out in prep for window cutting... Use the proper tools and do it right if you have a more complicated window design... at least that's how I feel
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs141%2FjrfhoutxAM%2FXbox360%2F100_0612.jpg&hash=4213ddfabdc32428ef5f33acd3871700de219852)(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs141%2FjrfhoutxAM%2FXbox360%2F100_0616.jpg&hash=5c93f9e4bca49af5b7e9682aea832de6de3b2003)

and if you want it accurate... do the math...
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs141%2FjrfhoutxAM%2FXbox360%2F100_0613.jpg&hash=2abb98ed4283d0a5f522d1f35a12e41aec52b6c7)(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs141%2FjrfhoutxAM%2FXbox360%2F100_0619.jpg&hash=c9499b438e66a1e49b1d20e1163a3e4c04d40dfc)
The XBOX360 recess will get filled in with a little bondo before paint so it'll be nice and smooth on this side, like there was never anything there...

Since this was a former RROD console I decided to do a ROL window... I figured it was a natural choice, hence why I'm calling it 'Phoenix' right now...
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs141%2FjrfhoutxAM%2FXbox360%2F100_0617.jpg&hash=ec615c601d7906e238f5055bc8f4859e335651a4)(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs141%2FjrfhoutxAM%2FXbox360%2F100_0623.jpg&hash=f7f4a883953347c0b4f3c72eae57aa628c2761e7)

All the masking peeled off and ready to cut...
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs141%2FjrfhoutxAM%2FXbox360%2F100_0624.jpg&hash=3892509fac430051ab643b4d962e79e4782005dc)

Houston vs. Grand Rapids tomorrow so hopefully I'll be watching some blood spill on the ice instead of cutting and sanding a window...

let me know what you think... all suggestions and warnings welcomed, they may not be heeded but they are welcomed, lol...

UPDATE 1:
Started to cut the window today...

Used a sharpie to mark the outline so I give myself a little margin of error...
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs141%2FjrfhoutxAM%2FXbox360%2F100_0631.jpg&hash=592917f87b9b2bd598585f409020c926c977a08f)(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs141%2FjrfhoutxAM%2FXbox360%2F100_0642.jpg&hash=296932573381a2048babcf41d1bdb4a6f79d1b22)

Bracings on the underside ground down...
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs141%2FjrfhoutxAM%2FXbox360%2F100_0639.jpg&hash=298c9670faf5633f177519ae397589e00cf39894)(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs141%2FjrfhoutxAM%2FXbox360%2F100_0640.jpg&hash=cdd026ae66bb74ad6ca6460ca2353338329debb1)

Had a couple of small mishaps with the dremel, nothing a little bondo and sandpaper can't fix tho, that is if they're bad enough, I'll find out once I peel of all the masking...
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs141%2FjrfhoutxAM%2FXbox360%2F100_0636.jpg&hash=cdd788cf1662ca08ee00b631b74164397471f9d1)(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs141%2FjrfhoutxAM%2FXbox360%2F100_0634.jpg&hash=8897534ac36d9d256d1dbf84a2e97a02fe195414)

On to filing and sanding next...

Oh, and Houston barely beat grand rapids 5-3... it was close at the end, lol

UPDATE 2:

Filed down the outer parts of the ROL. I don't have a file small enough to fit the power symbol cut out, so it's off to Sears today... gotta go get some new coping saw blades anyway, lol...

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs141%2FjrfhoutxAM%2FXbox360%2F100_0694.jpg&hash=4335f06ffb9c8df797ed410eba22653a0a431857)(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs141%2FjrfhoutxAM%2FXbox360%2F100_0697.jpg&hash=c5ad9154f0224e999c2594a059e36affeb110807)

here is one of the supports I'm trying to work around...
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs141%2FjrfhoutxAM%2FXbox360%2F100_0702.jpg&hash=ee6d44a3d595a7758b5a05bc7ffaf975fdedb9f8)

haven't decided if I'm gonna cut individual pieces of plexi to put inside each part of the window or if I'll just put the plexi behind the cutout... but I'm leaning towards inserts, they just look nicer...

So, going to go get a new file and some new blades for my coping saw and some sand paper so that I can cut the plexi for the window.

UPDATE 2 Posted...

Now on another note: Taking suggestions on paint scheme... right now I'm leaning toward either red or a red-orange fade or red-orange-yellow fade... I was also thinking about some pin-striping or something similar...

What do you guys think, any ideas?

Oh, and do we have anyone here who's a good airbrush or pinstripe artist?
Title: Re: Work Log: Pheonix

Green to red fade, ROL colors would be cool. And I can pinstripe if you need man.

idk if I'll go with green/red since the ROL isn't green/red anymore

Thanks ghost, saw that controller the other day, looks pretty nice, I just bought some brushes and a few cans of 1shot, so I'm gonna practice a bit and see if I can't have a go at it myself...

One word of warning when cutting windows... If you plan on cutting through the XBOX360 logo imprinted on the side watch out for M$'s shoddy craftsmanship... I was roughing out the last of the power symbol cut out with a file and ran into an odd problem...

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs141%2FjrfhoutxAM%2FXbox360%2F100_0703.jpg&hash=7272de59ba2c99186ae01cd73f4f12909561f1d9)(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs141%2FjrfhoutxAM%2FXbox360%2F100_0704.jpg&hash=703ac07a43847065202d5435fb890ed551a36ada)(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs141%2FjrfhoutxAM%2FXbox360%2F100_0707.jpg&hash=28724c26a716965fb34c3e76d2cd177b1c044389)

I don't know why they would need to manufacture the case in this manner, but now I'm kinda pissed, that's either gonna take a ton of bondo or some epoxy to put it back in place and bondo before paint...

well I do have a bunch of el wire somewhere, but not sure I wanna use it on this project, let alone find it buried in a stack of boxes somewhere... besides it'll be far more difficult to accomplish the effect I'm after on this project...

you should use individually cut plexi glass (or whatever else your using) for the window.  That way the when a led lights up it doesn't go to the end of the plexi glass and light up a different indicator.  I hope what I'm saying makes sense.

makes perfect sense, that's kinda what I was thinking, guess I'll be doing an awful lot of cutting and sanding to get them to perfectly fit into the cutouts... lol
Title: Re: Work Log: Pheonix

or you could just cut 5 squares and put them under the cut out.

I just prefer the clean look of inserts, when the case is smooth and flat across the face, like it were stock... unless someone knows some kind of clear resin that I could mix up and pour into the cutouts... that would make life so much easier...
Title: Re: Work Log: Pheonix
Post by: krazyone2006 on January 03, 2010, 05:48:31 AM
why not tape the one side and fill them with clear hot glue it would then have the slight foggyness that the actual power button has  :yess: and easyly fixwd if messed up
Title: Re: Work Log: Pheonix
Post by: whuthefxk on January 10, 2010, 05:23:35 PM
downside of resin is that you WILL get tiny airbubbles if you dont use a pressure pot!
Title: Re: Work Log: Pheonix
Post by: jrfhoutx on January 11, 2010, 09:41:31 PM
ok so I tried the hot glue idea on the smallest part of the power symbol cut out and it kinda works. though if I do use that idea then I need to find some sort of smooth surface to tape onto the front that won't melt when the hot glue touches it. I used masking tape initially, first I tried using the sticky side, not thinking that it would stick to the glue, then I taped it on so that the non-sticky side faced the glue and it came out textured (cause the masking tape is textured), I tried saran wrap and it just melted, I might try some clear plastic packing tape or scotch tape in the next few days and see how that turns out.

Title: Re: Work Log: Pheonix
Post by: pigoesfar on January 12, 2010, 03:31:24 PM
I  would suggest wax paper, but hot glue does NOT peel off wax paper after it drys.  You would have to do  it before it drys.  I does not melt through it though.  I happen to have tried to do something kind of similar.

IDK about foil tape, but actual foil should work just fine, as foil tape has residue
Title: Re: Work Log: Pheonix
Post by: jrfhoutx on January 13, 2010, 05:29:33 PM
foil still presents the problem of texturing the face of the hot glue...

ok so I did a little testing and found that using clear packing tape (the non sticky side) works perfectly, so I'm gonna try that first...

Title: Re: Work Log: Pheonix
Post by: jrfhoutx on August 27, 2010, 01:08:17 PM
ok so I don't want to hear about bumping old topics, this is a worklog and it's finally being updated...

UPDATE:

ok so it's been over 6 months since I've done anything with this project. Thing have been really slow at work lately so I've started bringing some stuff to mod in my down time at work and thought I might as well start with this project...

Window inserts marked, cut, and ground down. I finally decided to do inserts instead of gluing a piece of plexi to the inside. I didn't like the idea of a window that isn't flush with the face of the case...
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs141%2FjrfhoutxAM%2F5fb9689d.jpg&hash=8aaec0e1310b8db8f28679b70fa74faf9c11d08b)

I'm not sure if I'll use this cage for this project, or if I'll use it for my latest project. I have seen several windows exposing the x-clamps, and have seen a few with a window and a cutout in the cage, so I decided I'd give it a shot...
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs141%2FjrfhoutxAM%2F981ca015.jpg&hash=b38b31297c366a597105c5c91ac9ee3850e5eea8)

still haven't finalized a paint scheme, but one of the painters at my work is going to paint the case for me. He's said he has a few custom colors (chameleon, candy apple red, and a maroon/burgundy pearl thy almost looks like black when it's in the shade) but I'm not sure which of those if any I should use. I kinda want to do the chameleon just for the novelty of it. Whatever color I pick, this baby is getting a pro paint job :)

so again, any color suggestions?
