Title: ok so you can say this is a noob question LOL
Post by: krazyone2006 on January 01, 2010, 12:04:29 PM
ok so i've never hooked up a fan controller ,Rheostat ect before so i need a lil help with the wireing up of it or a diagram if anyone has one laying around or could make one. But i got this at Rat Shack today its what the guy said i needed to control the speed of the fan (hopefully they were right cause its a blizzard here and i don't wanna go back out LOL) but anyone who can help i thank you very much just basically need to know how to wire it into the fan and that

Wire your source line to the middle pin and either of the side legs to the fan.
It's basically a potentiometer. If you can't wire one, you're best not bothering.

You could've used something smaller and easier, like a small potentiometer instead of a rheostat. You just need to make sure it's rated for the power you're working with..

No. You don't "have" to, but you could wire the other terminal side to ground to reduce noise (I think).

Yeah, this will work fine, I'm just saying you could've found smaller pots that could work if you tried lol

ok well  since its three, im not sure if it was 2 i could tell you. However what im thinking is that the pins  could be touching a peice of metal in the consol. what i would do is try using a pot instead like kicks said. Also what im a little confused about  is why you have the ground connected to one of the pins on the controller, cheack the back of the package it came in to make sure its connected to the right pins.  if still getting the 3rrod  diagnose what the error is using  the method stated here https://www.acidmods.com/forum/index.php/topic,21654.0.html (https://www.acidmods.com/forum/index.php/topic,21654.0.html)

You didn't seem to read.
You can (as per wikipedia) connect one terminal to ground to reduce noise on the signal line.
There's no "controller" here either.
He can't use any old pot either. He needs one rated for the power he's putting through it.

Krazy, disconnect GND and try it to be sure.

mk kicks not to start anything  but as he stated before on his diagram it is listed as the fan controller that is what i am going bye here. as for the any normal pot that would have gone without saying.  however as for the  ground, your correct i didnt read. Kicks what im thinking here is that not all the power is goint to the fans hence the rrod. Error 0030, not enough power going to the fans.

ok a lil experementing and i got it by taking the ground off the controller and just grounding the fan instead of the fan and the controller at the same time  :faint:

wait ok so your saying that you just took  out the "controller" and just connected strait to it? if so this is a 12v correct, if so  when connected to xbl you would be banned

Lax do you even know what you're talking about? You don't get instantly banned for powering the fans through 12v, it would take a long time on Live to have a chance of being banned.
He's not using the DVD power, which causes the ban.
And no, I'm not starting anything, I'm just saying.

ok i got the 12v going to the center pin on the controller the positive from the fan going to the left side pin on the controller  and the fan ground, grounded and its working and i don't plan on playing on live so i'm now worried about the box getting banned by the ban hammer and the the 12v spot i used is off the mobo itself behind the power plug on the topside of the motherboard

kicks i understand what your saying however he never stated that he was using that spot for the 12v or did he say that he would use it on xbl. and i do know what  i am talking about. lets just stop it here

Actually you don't, since you were wrong...

You're right, stop it here because I'm not wasting my time on you.

Krazy, you're perfectly fine having it wired that way no matter what you're doing.
And I read the wikipedia page wrong. You can wire the wiper to the unused terminal to cut down on noise.

ok i just read through this thread and im guessing your not using this "fan controller" (LOL) on the stock fans????? but on a extra 1 yes??? like in your work log unknown....

and also if your using the 12v spot u asked me about.... then you  wont get banned from live....... and  if you do it wont be from that 12v... as it's a direct 12v from the power pack..... not a secondary 12v from say the fans or dvd (which can get you banned)
2 out of my 3 consoles are using mods similar to this aswell as 2 of my friends consoles that i did for them. and none have been banned using this 12v supply or any other that is direct to the power pack......

im glad you got this working. and good luck finishing up this mod.....
