Title: Ultra Quiet Flanless Console
Post by: FOOKz™ on January 06, 2010, 04:09:59 PM
The noise of my Xbox360 and My Computer GET ON MY :censored:ING NERVES!

The Fans are Just annoying and get boring. I was thinking a huge mofo heatsink sticking out of the side. Wouldn't that Look B/A ? HAHA!

Here were a few heatsinks I saw on google images: http://images.google.com/images?gbv=2&hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&ei=EyZFS6yaFtDOlAel1JAg&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=Huge+ass+heatsinks&spell=1&start=0 (http://images.google.com/images?gbv=2&hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&ei=EyZFS6yaFtDOlAel1JAg&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=Huge+ass+heatsinks&spell=1&start=0)

Lets figure out ways to do this for other people with the same problem.

Thermoelectric Modules... use them instead of heat sinks?...

water cooling can be pretty quite too.

Wouldn't there be a pump that's louder than a fan?

i'm learning new stuff everyday. That Sounds pretty Straight forward enough.

depending how you go about it water cooling is far more quite than air, I helped water cool my mates pc, the pump didn't really make much noise, and his rad didn't need a fan. It was basically silent. The problem in a 360 is no space for rad ect.

be careful with Peltier cooling, I hear depending on how they are used the cold side can form condensation, which will be dangerous. So don't slap one directly onto the gpu or cpu.

The point in trying to get out of people is to try to think outside the box? Maybe Design the console's case around the heatsink? A huge heatsink gouging out of the side!

BTW: i am not that retarted; i might try it anyway, but still i will look around for heatsinks with monster heat conductivity (i don't care how big it is [it will just look cool] )

I find it funny that your "huge ass heatsinks" google search gave pics of a 360 motherboard with the heatsinks on lmao.

I think a big ass heatsink sticking out would look awesome as well, but how would you go about cooling the heatsink? As it is,the 360 heatsinks get hot enough to burn you even after minimal use of the console.

I like this, though. I may try a more silent method of cooling in my 360 I'll be working on soon. What are thermoelectric modules?

I was gonna use some TE modules on my RROD console, but decided against it... next one I get tho I was gonna get some then do a cooling comparison between that and AS5... idk, worth a try to get rid of the loud ass fans (not sure if the console would give you an error without the fans tho) especially if you have a 360 that has one of the quieter DVD drives...

The problem in a 360 is no space for rad ect.

Don't remember who it was but I have seen someone here (I think it was here) water cool a 360 and keep it all internal...

I know Neubit did one with an external radiator, and I saw blacburn did one (looked like it had no DVD drive tho), and I found the one I remembered but I was wrong, it's not from AM...

Im not 100%, but thermoelectric modules are basically heat pumps, one side of them gets really cold and draws all the heat from what it is attached to and the other side gets very hot (needs a heat sink to disperse the heat). I think fridges sort of use the same thing, thats why they feel hot on the outside.

oh and wow thats awesome 360, small rad though so I wonder how efficient it is.

yeah that's pretty much the idea of them...

an yeah that 360 is pretty nice, the builder says it dissipates heat really well actually... idk i think at some point in that insanely long thread he posts some temps...

crazy idea here just thinking out loud here.... i saw a comp cooled by mineral oil on you tube not sure if a 360 is that much different but the mobo and everything was fully submerged under the miner oil.... here take a look Mineral Oil Submerged Computer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtufuXLvOok#normal)   cool huh.... like i said dont know if this will work but any1 willing to try? i dont own a 360 but i have a xbox classic and im thinking bout trying it with that.... would that be quiet enough?
Title: Re: Ultra Quiet Flanless Console
Post by: jrfhoutx on January 06, 2010, 09:53:15 PM
probably could work, don't see why not, except that one of the loudest parts of the 360 is the DVD drive and that would have to be on the outside of the aquarium (can't immerse the dvd drive) and the air pump that they used for bubbles would be kinda loud too...

i bet we could implement a high wattage peltier to cool down the GPU/CPU. Damn, my next project was a submerged 360.... Ive been talking about doing it for months...  :dribble:

im not sure how quiet this would be but man it would look sick having 2 of these coming out the side of a case. in stead of the stock heatsinks and fans.....
but you would need to remove the disc drive, maybe put in a HD drive case like jumbo did for his mod off entry

.....

or if you want to go completely fan less. you'll probilly have to do something like this

wasn't there an entire case for the 360 made out of heatsinks?  it was expensive though like $500

Isn't this what they did with the LaCie super small 1Tb Hard Drive? Or maybe they do that with others too.  Saw one at my friends house.  No fan, the entire thing is one big heatsink.

OK here's an idea for the CD drive it can be submerged !IF! you seal it with this water proof crap for electronics i seen it in a previous mod where i took a usb and took off the case to expose it as a circuit board only then sprayed it with this sealant... worked perfectly... any ways u can use that or any other kind of sealer then cut out a whole on the side of a Custom made tank... made from Plexiglas.... and have the front of the tray sticking out and then seal it with caulking or some other sealer of ur choice.... i don't see why that wouldn't work.... and as for the pump, it was just there for a design he didn't need it as it was unnecessary

sorry i have had this idea for a while but not the stuff to do it  :dntknw: ... maybe ill convince my dad to get me a tank and some stuff and ill do this with my XBOX classic who knows lol

I Will probably try this on my computer first instead of my 360. I never use my CD Drive, it can be removed.

Can't wait to get some mineral oil and a fish tank. Hey spurgurgle that's one bad a$s mothafµckin heatsink computer case.

nope i think they meant this one http://www.atechfabrication.com/products/HeatSync_three-sixty.htm (http://www.atechfabrication.com/products/HeatSync_three-sixty.htm)
there was a thread about it a while back, but i think it was pretty much agreed that it was waaay overpriced. the base price is about $1200. says the case itself is like $700 but then it says only available as a complete system for way more soooo...

also, i would love to see a submerged console. if only i had one i would gladly try it. shouldn't be too hard to make a drive watertight (try it without the innards first?), this is most definitely relevant to my interests.

ironically enough... cutting plexiglass for a xbox case for my lil bro lol... ok ima try and make some cash and i will do this now definitely gotta get some cash for the oil though :)

Today in school i was drawing a plexi-glass fish tank with a spot for the Xbox's disk drive to sit on the outside of the Fish tank. The Disk drive bill be recessed inside the tank so it still looks legit.

Then i will draw it in AutoCAD 2010 and cut my pieces with our CNC machine. Hopefully Epoxy will water/mineral oil tighten the fish tank with a :censored: drive hole in the side.

The Cable for the disk drive will run through a hole just tight enough for the power and data Cables. Window and Door Caulking will seal the hole good enough.

I will test this is three stages:

1. test to see if the disk drive will fit in it's outside case.

2. Glue a bunch of Test wires (IDE cable Ethernet cable) instead of an actual xbox360 disk drive and it's cables with water. (Check for leaks)

3. Then i Will try a p00p computer that i don't need. see if that runs overnight on full processor power to see if it cools OK. (Check for Leaks and Stability)

4. Testing the xbox360.

Woohooo Its done (hopefully)

what you could do is make a sealed plexiglass enclosure on the side of the fish tank with a drive slot cut in the sealed part. This would allow it to still "sit" in the fish tank, but stay dry and semi easy to access  :drunk:

also, if your planning on running it for more than a few hours, it is advised to use a pump and radiator to circulate to the coolant from the bottom of the tank, to the top. (Ive done a lot of research on oil cooled PCs) Otherwise the oil will be stagnant and will heat up very quickly.
