I got a ipod touch 1st gen 8gb and I was wondering where is a good place to start to get info on jailbreaking and the benefits of actually jailbreaking. I need to update it the "new" firmware and I was wondering if I jailbreak it do I even need to update?
any help is appreciated. I usually don't keep up a certain homebrew scene unless I actually own the hardware that's why I'm asking.

don't update to the latest firmware (3.1.3), 3.1.2 is the latest jailbreakable firmware...
here are 2 jailbreak sites to keep an eye on and get all the info and tools needed to jailbreak:
GeoHot's blog (http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com/)
the DevTeam's site (http://blog.iphone-dev.org/)
Oh, yeah... Jailbreaking is definitely something you want to do. It's easy and it makes the iPod Touch/iPhone so much nicer to use...

You can JB 3.1.3 but only with 3.1.2 SHSH files backed up through Cydia I heard.

Jailbreaking allows you to run non-approved Apps on your device, which is great because there are lots of Apps out there that haven't been allowed on the App Store. However, an App can usually access all the stored personal information on the iPhone so if you aren't 100% sure a third-party App is safe, don't install it.
Just throwing that out there.
I believe you can jailbreak an iPhone using Black Ra1n (http://blackra1n.com/ (http://blackra1n.com/)).

thanks aquatsr, I just found a tutorial for jailbreaking my itouch using that exact program you linked. I'm going to update to 3.12 then use the blackrain program to jailbreak.
any suggestions for apps I should have? and what's cydia? I keep on hearing about it all over the place, it must be important...

A few of the Apps I liked (I don't have a touch anymore) were the ones that let you use the iTouch as a keyboard/mouse. I think Logitech has a decent one.
It's great 'cause you can sit on your couch or whatever, or even be in a different room and still control the computer.

its basically the app store for homebrew. i recommend rock as its the same as cydia but more than twice as fast.
-
for apps I recommend backgrounder and multiflow...

Official Apps: Outside, Hookchamp, Rampchamp, BeejiveIM, Shazam, Remote, Tweetie 2.
Cydia Apps: SBdettings, Scobbl, Winterboard, SnowcoverPro, iFile, Iconoclasm.
All you need in this world :3
Oh and when you jailbreak, it is worth updating again. Being apps start losing capability for your firmware, plus the extra features you do get when you update.

Haculous is good for tyying out apps before you buy them
All you need is the sender to the troll bridge (for now)

What's grayed out?

If you can't use the iPod at all, hold home and power buttons until you see recovery screen. Use iTunes to recover to 3.1.2. Download and install blackrain with iTunes CLOSED. Run blackrain. Install Rock and Cydia from the App it puts on your iPod. Use cydia, add the repo "www.sinfuliphonerepo.com (http://)" (I think that's it), search for installous, winterboard or whatever.
Easy.

What's grayed out?
The wifi option. I won't let me turn it on or off, it just says no wifi and it's grayed out.

Don't jailbreak yet. Restore iPod from iTunes and put on 3.1.3.
Wait for new jailbreak (a week or 2 at the very most.

I did that and it still didn't work. Anyways it's okay now I found someone who still wanted to buy it off of me knowing what the condition was. I got a pair of bose on ear headphones and $30 for it. I'm pretty happy.
