ok so i have a 60gb backwards compatible ps3 that heats up like crazy. the side and the back gets really warm but it didn't do this a couple of weeks ago. i keep the ps3 on my table where there is plenty of space too. the ps3 has never turned off by itself and i would like to prevent that from happening at all. any tips to fixing this? is it possible the fan is broken? or could it have something to do with my room temperature cuz my room gets really warm.
any help is appreciated.

maybe its clogged with dust??? take the top cover off (warranty is expired so don't be shy) and clean that :censored:

Well to see if the fan is broken I would say try to do a fan test.
For 60 gig PS3:
1. First turn off the PS3,
take off all cables except the power cable, and then place the PS3 vertically with the PS3 logo being upside down.
Turn on the PS3 it then would do a fan test (think that it’s a safety feature that Sony made so the fans
would run on max when the PS3 was placed on the fans so it would not over heat.)
2. Flip the PS3 so the logo would be right side up, and the PS3 would stop running the fans on max.
If you hear it -- it's not broken since it will make the fan spin on max to the point you will hear it.
And as alman101 said open it up and clean it. Only reason besides the fan not working would be built up of dust making it run hot.

Understand this thaq93 if it is opened, or tampered with in anyway Sony will not fix it at all. The over heating problem leads to a few things, the most common is the blu-ray failing. Yes, it costs 150$ to have it fixed by Sony, I have been through this twice. However once they fix it you get a new warranty from them.
They will not, under any circumstances fix your console if:
Invalid Service Request Number is listed (This is on the form you'll include in the box to them)
Excessive wear and tear, neglect, abuse, accident and/ or modification not performed by Sony.
(including scratches or dings that COULD be from drops, painted case ect)
Serial number sticker / label has been tampered with, cut, ripped, removed.
I've seen all of these previously, if the label is not perfectly flat they assume the worst. (happened to a friend)
Oh and the kicker, they won't return the money because the console will have been examined before repaired.
So if there is any chance you'll need to send it to them, (my overheating lead to yellow light) don't open it or mess with it, you'll get back a broken console and no money.

even if hdd was expanded to higher capacity. even still could one just put back in teh old 60 gig hdd and they wont notice or do they have teh screws at a specific torque level and tehy check that too?

there are instructions how to upgrade the hdd in the manual it is supported 100% by sony and does NOT void any warranty (you still need to keep the original drive because sony wont service it without it.) and opening it up voids the warranty, but i know from personal experience that sony will still fix it (depending on what was done of course)

my 60gb started doing that too its gets really hot and that fan is sp loud on the highest setting so i got worried about it and opened it it was clean to my suprise so im not sure what i can do about ir

I opened my PS3 40g last week for the 1st time (peeled the seal off myself) and I noticed I'm missing a few screws.... >_>
I had 6 screws (1 small 5 long) and no "security" screw in the bottom middle.
It's a 40g CECHGxx model so did they forget to add screws or they did not add the ones missing til later models?

If youve opened it up and its clean then its 2 things
1 the original thermal compound sony use (white horride stuff) has dried out replace with new lovely stuff your choice of make.
2. the temp sensor if faulty (simular problem to xbox360 2 red lights)reflow to fix .... not with a hairdryer people with a proper reflow machine
