Title: How to build a PIC Programmer to program a PIC12F683?
Post by: whitey898 on July 20, 2010, 01:55:12 AM
I've been searching around this forum. All I get is a diagram. I need to know a guide on what items are needed, where to solder, and stuff like that. I need some help, sort of new on building this. I'm an experienced solderer.

Post the schematic im curious. I could draw you and easier to follow schematic if you don't understand things. =]

what dont you understand?
all the parts are labled. the red dots indicate wire conections, wire/line intersections without the red dot indicdicat wires running past each other.

here is a pic of one I built:

Yea that's pretty simple programmer to build. if you don't know the parts just Google them. if you don't want to build it you could get a great 15$ programmer and its more advanced the way its built. it works with many other chips too.

free shipping.

Maybe this is a lil' off topic, but the USB to DB9 cable, i CBA to spend £20 on one that I'm gonna use once, so do you know how to wire up USB to DB9?

Also where i can grab that chip in the UK

If you need a usb programmer, your best bet is to buy a pickit2 or pickit2 clone.   there are also ways to make programmers from serial line and many are posted in this section.

I've built a similar programmer myself, my suggestion is don't.

I built two varieties and they both failed to work. I believe they require either 9V or 13V, most modern PCs don't have serial ports and a large portion of those that do won't be able to reach the required voltage. To combat this I bought a USB Serial Adapter; looking back this couldn't have worked. USB only supplies 5V so I wouldn't have come close.

Anyway, far more trouble than it's worth. PICkit 2s are great and fairly cheap as well, save yourself the hassle.

If you built two and they both failed to work, you are going to have a hard time modding anything. the programmer works flawlessly, why do you think its posted here?

as stated before, this programer MUST have a serial conection, a usb adapter will not work.

you can have the satisfaction of building this yourself for around 15-20 dollars, or you can buy one off the net for about the same price. Its all about what you want. are you a DYI guy or are you a ebay drone?

Chances are they would have worked, if I'd have had a serial port. I tried two different diagrams and none worked for the reason explained, lack of a serial port.

I use a PICKIT 2 and then for your board going from the PICKIT 2 to your PIC12F863, here is a schematic:

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg707.imageshack.us%2Fimg707%2F3301%2Fpic12f863pickit2program.png&hash=001f0e60e656afd0d5eea7ebc157fbfec417e6a1)

I cant get my PCB designer to save the traces, so they are drawn in using paint.
