Ive checked the hdd. i put back in the old 60 gig. and then the 320. itll just randomly shut off. when i unplug it and flip the i/o switch and reconnect and what not, then i can get the ps3 all the way to a user. but then itll just shut off and beep 3 times and flash the red light. i press the power button. and it stops flashing and goes to a steady red. i cant turn on the console with the ps3 controller. it just flashes all 4 player slots on the controller. other than sending it into Sony can i get some help...
edit
i have the fist gen 60 gig model

Hi, I might be able to help, but I need to know if you updated to FW 3.41 and after the update this happened, if so you might try putting your PS3 in to recovery by holding down the power until you hear 3 beeps and then restore your PS3., if that doesn't work you might need to send it in. Your PS3 is just crashing, my original 80GB does it when I'm on the internet with it. But what your saying sounds like you need to do a full restore. You can fined how to put your ps3 in recovery on youtube. hope this helps.
P.S. Most 60GB models have problems, I recommend finding and original 80GB (4 USB & card reader) or, I hate saying this, a new slim model.

my little brother said he updated the firmware earlier yesterday. he played some cod then ate dinner and never got back on. then i got home from work about 10:30 and my father told me he couldn't get the system to work...
i looked up how to put the system in recovery mode. however im not sure if ill be able to hold the button for that long before the system takes a dump.but ill give it a shot tomorrow now its time for bed
-
that system is dead bud. its the YLoD
-
isnt the ylod a dead psu. i dont have a yellow light. and my system still turns on just not for long
-
@budgray19
Its not the YLOD, but you should try restoring it, it helped my PS3.
that system is dead bud. its the YLoD
The YLOD is the PS3 equivalent of the Xbox 360`s RROD, but a lot less common.
@budgray19
Your PS3 should be fine.
Oh and you probably have a file from the last update that is now corrupt. You should still be OK.
-
yea i put it in recovery mode and it still died on me...but lets assume i had time to do it all what would i do. go into the firmware tab?
-
yes i know what the YLOD is. had it like 3 times.
PS3 Dead - Yellow Light - Sony Customer Service (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmLlvRtpHrA#normal)
as you can see from this video, the YLoD is a 3x beep and flashing red light. the "yellow light" is a VERY fast thing. it flashes on and off in less than a second.
and bud, the power supply is not the problem. the known fixes for your problem are reflow for a temp fix or a complete reball for a more "permanent" fix.
-
There are a few fixes for YLOD, make sure the following works: HDD, power supply, drive, and its not over heating
-
yea no it was off for 3 hrs before someone turned it back on.my little brother shut it off then my dad came back to play some fallout(the system does freeze on that game after a few hrs) but it shut its self off...
i dont think its a overheating issue.
edit. just checked and yea it is the ylod. what do u mean by reball lol
-
remove both gpu and cpu and then remove the old solder and put new lead pellets and solder it back to the mobo. but for that you will need a BGA rework station. Some one might explain this more clearly.
-
yea i looked it up... ehh im good.

sony will be able to help. as you have a 60 gig it would be stupid to "upgrade" to a slim.
-
yea i just could see them sending me some other bs model. i mean its not the hdd i care about i already have a 320 so ill just swap it out with the old hdd.
if ima fix it ima do it right but 600-1000 for the BGA rework station or send it to sony for 150..
-
i would do the 150.
60 gig model is the best cause it has full BC
-
So it was the YLOD, that must mean my 80BG is about to :censored: out, because it does the same thing at times, oh well, sorry i couldn't be of more help. hope Sony fixes it or replaces it with a model with full B.C.

they replace it with the exact same model you send in.
-
they replace it with the exact same model you send in.
Cool I wouldn't know about that, I haven't needed to send my PS3 in yet.
But that's good to know.
-
im thinking of getting a ps3, so what type of model would be appropriate to buy? like the most reliable?
-
easy fix, just take it apart down to where the heat sink is still attacted and heat gun the top, it worked for alot of the ones I've done
-
yea but how long does that last
-
DO NOT DO THAT! you could cause more harm than good.
-
yea dont worry im not gonna reflow. if im gonna fix it ill do it right( buy the BGA work station) but i dont have 600 bucks so im gonna save up 75 and ill get half and little brother will get the other half. then we'll send it to sony

Well i have had my 80GB since they first came out with no real problems, so i would say get the original 80GB (4 USB and card reader).

same here, bought one used from work (gamestop) and i LOVE it
i won't ever get a non-bc ps3 again...
-
@budgray19
did u notice anything unusual about the ps3 before u started getting these blinking lights? i also have that model but i bought it from gamestop in december of 09 ive noticed mine is heating up a bit too much and id like to avoid a situation where it shuts off due to overheating so i jus wanted to kno if u had a problem similar to mine that led u to ur dilemma.
-
well we got ours winter of 06. the fist model always gets realy hot. i dont play it that much. my little brother and dad play it. i know it will freeze after a few hrs or fallout 3 game play.
u could also get the tailsmoon fan for the ps3
-
are you sure the ps3 wont have more complications by installing this fan have you ever tried it or know any1 who has? and do you have a video of the installation by any chance?
thanks for your help and sorry for bombarding you with questions while you are trying to solve your own problem
-
just look it up on youtube. im sure they have a ton of vids.
i could see it giving the ps3 psu a prob but i dont know. i havent heard of any probs and i know that company did great for the 360's fan. on the 360's aftermarket internal fan pushes double the cfm on normal than the old 360's stock fan... so yea
