Short Circuit.
Make sure all wires are connected properly. You are connecting the + and the - of the battery by accident, which is why it heats up.
Exposed wires should have some tape/hot glue on it and be sure the wires connect to the right place.
Draw your circuit on a piece of paper so you can see for yourself exactly what needs to be wired. It happens to any of us.

you're never supposed to connect the + and - of a battery together directly. It drains the battery and everything gets hot.

I'll draw something real quick.

Check your work and try to draw your mod's circuit on paper and compare it to what i have drawn.
If you notice why the bad circuit can "short" out the battery... the switch can turn on and off and its hooked directly across the battery. Yes, it will turn the circuit on and off but thats just not how you do it because electricity could start a fire even at low voltages from batteries.
Just check your work be sure its wired up like the good circuit.
