This is off a a bad board from a PS3 that I was practicing on before I did the Bga swap, there are 4 points on here that are bad, that must of came off when I was practicing soldering another bga chip. was wondering if there is a way to fix this. needs to be cleaned up alittle, not sure if the solder will even stick , Just thought I would ask and see if anyone could help me or anyone else that might have a problem like this that needs to be fixed and how to go about fixing it.
-
nope.
When you were heating the chip up you were ether way too hot or you were not how enough.
When Solder is not hot enough it has a consistency of melted plastic.
When Solder is too hot it tends to sink down far into the copper's pours and it gets underneath the trace therefore lifting it off.

clean it up a bit and take another picture.. i wanna see something.. i believe that you can actually fix this.. it would be VERY hard...
if i was to make a tut, i would put it at 20/10 difficulty... mebbe even 25... but with patience i believe you can do it
-
Reply Ok I will clean it up and get new picture tomorrow thanks hop

thanks hop for taking the time to help

this is one that i see to be a problem. it looks like it is a tented through-hole via... not just a bga pad...
can you confirm this on the board itself? if it is, then it shouldnt be a problem to fix..
the area where the pads were will need some work.
you will need a fiberglass pen (I use a "lenline brush") LINK TO ONE @ RADIOSHACK (i dont use this, but it does look like it would be fine) (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3998315)
youll also need a conductive pen... Sample @ RadioShack (Get this one as it is silver and not nickel based) (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3964901)
3rd item youll need is a hobby knife preferably with a fine tip blade (#11, #2, or even #16)
4th item: Glossy Scotch tape/Painters tape/frog tape (basically something that is easy to remove
once you have these items, ill walk you thru it more. im looking for something with a bga on it so that i can follow along...
at this point, you need to think if the time and stess is worth it. I would do it, so as not to waste something that is perfectly good.
it may take a few tries, but if you follow the directions i give you, you should be able to get it done.
EDIT: another thing that oyu can do to prepare the board is to remove the solder from the pads. dont use the rubbing technique like that video, apply flux then use the dabbing technique wilst rolling the iron on the braid.

Thank you hop for the reply!... i have the fiberglass pen already,i will pick up the conductive pen today.
anything worth saving and anything i can learn new, is worth the stress. the end result of being able to fix something like this, doesnt make it stressful. also, that one spot you are conserned about, is not a thru hole.
Pratice makes perfect, and I dont see this being a waste of time. I took the chance on, fixing the problem and I learned alot, in the process of changing the bga, so the more i can learn about fixing someething like this is well worth it in my eyes.

im glad you see it that way, i feel the same way about things. doing it a few times just to do it, even if it doesnt help you now... may help you or someone else in the future.
i have that exact conductive pen. i looked at it this morning as i was on my way out the door.
i used it to mark on some black plastic since i cant find my white paint pen anywhere....
let me know when you have all the stuff, still looking for something similar to work with you on...
-
Should have it here in the next hour or so. I believe nothing is broke untill I say its broke. or unfixable...Lol
Ok HOP, I have cleaned the board like you said, I made the board smooth where the solder points are with the wic or braid. i didnt take out all the solder figure thats a bad idea, is it or does it need to be solder free?
also I have everything i need now to proceed.
-
ok, so i cant really find anything that will work to show you what I'm talking about, so i will show you on something abstract...
ill start working on it in a few minutes and post pictures to help anyone with this similar issue.
-
ok also you can tell me what to do and if i have any questions i will post back thanks for your help

If you guys can really fix this i really think that is cool. I have no idea if its going to work at all but i just want to see first.
can you solder to those conductive pen traces? IDK haven't tried that.

Still waiting on [HoP] to teach me, ...lol I think thats what he has in mind.
That one point that he was worried about I think might be a ground not circuits go that one row of points that he said he was worried about , Not positive thats what it is but just my thought.
-
i know how i would fix it, just stick the chip upside down next to where it used to be soldered then just hook it up with kynar wire and solder to the vias of the points that are bad.
-
thanks hyper, thats a good idea, . I think HOP wants to try and help me repair the board. at least thats what I asked if it could be fixed.
thank you though for helping out

The time may have come where its time I need to fix this , so will know when i get the PS3 apart and see if that is the problem, If it is I am going to be swaping another bga chip to this board i screwed up. wish me luck, get back to you in a few days or so, once i get other things done, then this project will be another success, if i get it working :)
