fiberglass and body filler (to smooth it out) are the best in my opinion, smaller holes can just use filler.  you want to use something that can be smoothed easily.

For holes / remodeling I use Bondo Glass (http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/1/1/3086-fairing-compounds-repair-putties-bondo-glass-filler.html) or Bondo Hair (http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/1/1/3087-fairing-compounds-repair-putties-bondo-hair-long-strand-fiberglass-body-filler.html) (usually Bondo Hair (http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/1/1/3087-fairing-compounds-repair-putties-bondo-hair-long-strand-fiberglass-body-filler.html))

For pitted or not smooth surfaces I typically use different epoxies.
