Light coats , keep it back a ways is what toad was saying  and light coats amd try to keep them even, wait about 15 minutes between coats , you dont want it to build up fast, you will end up having alot of problems if you do, make sure you sand it first and then clean it very good before starting.

before spraying any paint to the surface to coat... just spray on a random surface like a wall to get rid of the dry crud from the nozzle so your spray comes out evenly when painting the piece.

when ur done turn the can upside down and spray the remaining paint from the nozzle until only air comes out (this cleans the spray nozzle).
(sometimes if you get a special spray can that lets you paint upside down you can't do the above step, so clean the nozzle before you paint.).

Don't forget you can wet sand and polish when done, and that will take out a lot of imperfections.
Your problem isn't prep , its your timing of your spray and the thickness of your coats.
The trick to good clear coating is building  up your coats from fine to almost sagging. Letting more time to dry in between coats. I really should just make a proper painting tute . I just have not been painting things lately, except the m16 sharpshooter which just got a coat of ultra flat black.

Ok thats not a big problem, you can use a fine grit sand paper,1200 to 1500 grit, at any local auto parts should have it. then you can wet sand it enough to scuff it up and respray it again.

what type of paint are you using . the reason you are getting bubbles  (AKA solvent pop) is you are either too close or too wet. your sheen problem can be a few things . 1 paint is going on too dry , distance or coat of paint is to light . which makes it look dull because the light isnt refracting off it properly. 2 humidity can cause all kinds of weird things to happen. from shadows to under cured paint even lack of sheen. due to moisture being absorbed by the paint. 3 your clear and base coat came together , meaning either the clear was to wet or base wasnt dry enough before top coating . which is a solvent problem . and means solvent got trapped and is causing low sheen. 4  die back . another solvent based issue . is when the clear skims over and solvent cant escape or to much solvent is used and cant escape. this usually user error and some clears just die back from being junk product. nothing some buffing cant fix. ........... the fix for 1 is do some test patterns get your distance and speed right. 2 not much you can do if using spray bombs . 3 let base dry real good before topcoating. .4 wet sand reclear or buff .

if have more ?s let me know . paint is what i do .
