What could be the potential problems associated with an xbox 360 not powering on? I'm asking this because I have an old motherboard lying around that does not power on and I'm going to try and fix it as it is most possibly jtag-able.

First I need to know exactly what its doing? plug power supply in and dont have it hooked to xbox and tell me what color the led is on power supply . If yellow then plug in t the xbox and tell me what it is when its plugged in before turning it on then follow below.
Power supply lights? what color is it when you plug it in?

xbox 360 does it turn on then turn off?
xbox 360 does the fans come on at all? and have a green light on the power button on the 360?
xbox 360 have any lights on it at all 3 reds , 2 reds, 1 red ? 4 reds?
try turning it on and tell me what it does or dont do. I understand it dont turn on. but has to do something. or nothing at all on power supply or xbox should do something.

If you plug the xbox power supply in, and press the power button and nothing turns on, it's probably a short. These can occur in any of your ports... Check them and see if any pins are touching. I get xbox's like this all the time.

Lets have him run a test of what i gave him first to see what its doing.
Edit : This is true, sorry Neo read to fast, but run the test first. It will give us some more information about whats going on also.

well there are usb ports on the front, and an av port, and an hdmi port............. they're everywhere lol

Does the Light change when you press the buttong on the xbox? is the xbox opened? if you havent opened it , pull the faceplate off and try to turn it on that way. maybe the pin is broken on the face plate and not turning it on.
NEED to be more specific on what you have done. opened it is it out of the case what?

if you can open your 360 it would help..
do like neo said and check all the ports. if they are fine i would get a multimeter and check the standby voltage.

Then I would say its no good, shorted out. or just dead. cuz it should do something fans should come on the power led light should come on or flash red ring of lights so i am going to say it pretty much not worth messing with anymore.
EDIT: Have you tried everything i said to?

check the USB ports to see if any of the pins are touching the metal case. good place to start. ive picked up a fully working 360 that just had a broken USB port. just had to un bend the pins and it was good to go

well most shorts would probably occur from something touching the metal case that shouldnt be. So try taking the mobo out and turning it on... if it does something then check everything carefully when u put it back into the metal casing.

1st nEoVaLoR has mentioned this guys but seems where not getting enough info on what I asked him if he has tested and what not , He just says it wont turn on. waiting for a reply back.

sorry for the late reply but it has been out of the case when i tested it and as soon as i figure out how to get home I will put a multimeter to all the points and do a visual inspection.
