Title: Help - may have fried 360 controller
Post by: tomcraig on August 31, 2011, 06:05:04 PM
Hey guys, I'm big fan of the site and this is my first post.  I'm in the middle of modding my xbox controller which was working fine until recently.  I had the mobo plugged into my computer and turned it over to see smoke come out of one of the components :(.  Now the four LEDs light up very dimly when I plug it into the PC and it isn't recognized at all.  Here are some images, I'm fairly positive it's this little black piece - don't know what it is truthfully.  Any ideas of a repair or am I out of luck?  Thanks in advance.

Yeah those are the to one of the joysticks, and look like that because I desoldered and resoldered to them; I think they're okay.  Can I buy one of these pieces or will I have to salvage?

You need to get the number off of it , if possible, and should be able to get them frome mouser.com or digi-key.com i have bought stuff like that before , if thats all that was  smokeing your probably safe, but i would check the whole board over to make sure also i wouldnt be working on it hooked to your computer could short the computer out also . or something else

Well I think I can get the number from the other regulator near it on the board so I guess I'll order a new one.  Any tips for soldering something that tiny?  I may have to wrap a paper clip on my iron because I don't have a small enough tip.  Oh and this wire was soldered on post-frying, so I really have no idea what caused it in the first place :/.

if you can't get a surface-mount chip then just solder on wires and solder those to the chip.

tweezers and a steady hand is basically what you need. soldering LEDs is the same thing.
