Title: My 1st Console Case Mod(Ghost Warrior Case)
Post by: SixtyninNaMoose on August 31, 2011, 09:00:25 PM
Hey guys, this is my 1st console mod and its a mod of the 360slim. I have a bunch of ideas of mods that I haven't seen done here on acidmods. I'm making a model of the case mod in Autodesk Inventor to get an idea of what it'll look like before I start the mod. I need some info on how to tear down the 360slim and other useful info, I'd appreciate the help.

Here's some pics of my model so far

This is cool. I like it a lot.
I have a few pointers on speaker box design. I don't know the specs of the speakers you are using , but most do not like to be open air. Creating the right volume of air for your speaker is very important. Most mid range/full range speakers  can be put in a small sealed box w no problems. But I highly recommend you try to box that thing in. You can try a tuned port set up by taking a length of 1-2" tube and start long and cut 1/2" sections off one end until the box is tuned to your speaker. You can tell its tuned when the bass hits around the proper frequency for peek response for your speaker. IE when it bumps harder its tuned.
Another thing to remember is the back of the speaker will be generating heat. We know how much xbox's love heat. So separating the speaker box from the xbox might be a good idea.
Also if you place your speakers towards the bottom of the xbox it wont be so top heavy and you might run into trouble with vibrations and the disc drive. By moving the speakers down and away it does to things it stabilizes the xbox and hopefully keeps the vibrations away from the drives. Maybe make your setup a stand/dock, add in a usb hub too.
Tips for great sound.
1 separate your frequencies to different size speakers. Get a couple dome tweeters that you can spin and direct to the way you want them. Add in a crossover to separate the frequencies to high low and mid for 3 way and low-mid/high for 2way.
2 Find yourself some rubber spray and vibration deadening material. You can use all sorts of products from the car audio field.
3 not really a tip for sound but everyone loves leds to sound.

fookz was worried that placing speakers lower would screw up hdd. Also how do i know if speakers can have open air? heres link http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=290-216

can i heat n bend plexi around speakers like a tube?
and what krylon paint should i use on xbox?

this is the information for the box designs specks.... Vas: 0.36 cu. ft. • Qms: 6.59 • Qes: 0.74 • Qts: 0.66
you should be able to find a calculator box building tool on the google.  where you just plug these numbers into the calculator and it gives you proper box dimensions for sealed/ported etc.

sound good but if i was you i would put smaller speakers in as once you turn the xbox on your f*ck it up due to the magnets on the speakers i would also a lil part on your case to put the speakers in like a slope box and add a amp on it for own volume switch

i'm confused, fookz said it wouldn't mess up anything but hdd and witetop and carnage say will mess up 360. If i dont put any part of speaker in 360 case, just external will that prevent damage?

if you put them size speakers in it will :censored: the 360 up anyone with a IQ of 10% will know that i would get smaller ones if you want them in your xbox

The magnets will only mess up your hard drive. A hard drive has magnets in it, the disk drive has an electromagnet in it, which those don't mess up the xbox itself.

Be safe use your own judgement I won't argue any further because it just takes a minute of experimentation to see for yourself.

edit:
the magnet in the hard drive is probably the same strength as the speaker.

I recommend you put a compass in place of the hdd and see if your placement affects the compass. If it does, dont risk it. I have found many small but great sounding speakers that can be placed all most anywhere on the 360 . If you want something subwooferish you might have to think about mounting it in a base that is EM shielded. Far away from hdd.
A properly ported mini sub , can sound like a big sub if the box is tuned correctly. If you separate the frequencies to tweeters and a small full range it would sound even better.

one thing that makes me wonder is why are the speakers facing side to side why aren they facing the front  like slant the speaker on one side to give it an angle to face the player
