Title: Need to make a HOTT BOX
Post by: 1TONpete on September 08, 2011, 05:49:54 PM
I need to make a box that I can use to cure my acrylic parts . I want to vent to the out side through a window or something. Inside the box I need to keep it at 100f min. But not hot enough to melt stuff. I was thinking about an old computer case maybe and put some racks inside. seal it up and make a vent out the back. But what do I use to heat the box?

nichrome heating element wire. Found in hair dryers/heatguns. Just use a high power rheostat or a light dimmer switch to adjust your heater.

When you wrap your wire insulate the wire with ether mica, ceramic, or asbestos.
There are good thermal and electrical insulators. I've seen stuff called ZetexPlus which is a thermal and electrical insulator fabric you can buy which does the same thing but its probably not cheap.

I was thinking ceramic heater maybe. Don't like the idea of the fumes mixing with an open element.
1 thing I was thinking about was a 12vpeltier mounted to a heat sink fan combo.

not sure exactly how hot they get but maybe try one of them cheap peltier based mini fridges, I have one and there is a switch to select whether it heats or cools :)

1TONpete , you can  easily make a HOTBOX or its what they call a Curing oven,  with some simple items. 5/8 dry wall  its  flame retardant. this is what  they  put on the walls between the garage and house when you have a attatched garage (required by  law) would  framed box on the outside dry wall on the inside, small space heater to blow the hot air in and you can control the temperature that Way some 12 volt fans, or use like I have, a 6"x 6" 110volt fan for air flow and exhaust to out side,

Build a wood frame , as big as you want the curing oven to be. dry wall the inside of the frame, and insulate the out side of the frame.  you can get Cookie cooling racks cheep to place on the inside to set your parts on or cookie sheets, this works well I have made these a few times for a company I worked for except larger that you could walk in to. For curing poly urethane parts and rubber compression parts. works well stays around a 120 degrees but you  could drop the temperature to what you needed. and exhaust fans to draw out any harsh smells. could use drier duct to vent to out side,  if you dont have 5/8s dry wall just double up 1/2 inch dry wall aslong as its over 5/8 of inch think you  will be good to go and your parts will turn out great,

Expected cure time will cut your curing time in half , probably only need it in  there couple hours, poly urethane usually cures with in,24 hours max cure time, for durometer  reasons.

Durometer( hardness of the material) this is how they rate poly urethanes, soft to harder 30a  40a 50a 60a 70a 80a 85a 90a 95a
 these are like a brick 65d 75d

EDIT seriously guys really think he would post that here?

Thanks guys,
Rodent, I used be a drywall finisher, lol. nice thought on the 5/8s. Round here we call it purple board because its purple instead of blue/green. I can make the box, I am  just looking for ideas on heating/ventilation. I would like to stay around 12v range because im thinking bout using a 12v ps2 power supply . Thinking pc equipment. Anyways thanks everyone for your input so far. The device is going to be window shelf mounted.
