Hopefully someone can help me out. I just got a second hand slim xbox, this is the first xbox I have had that has hdmi. Anyway I go to hook this thing up to my pc monitor through hdmi and it defaulted to 480p, so I try to turn up the resolution (monitor being 1080p). No picture. I was using a crappy hdmi cable I picked up for a fiver off the internet so I swapped it out with the powerwave hdmi cable I use for my PC. Now 1080 shows up, but it has strange colorful lines happening.
I am a huge novice when it comes to hdmi, so maybe I am missing something here.
Things I know:
-Monitor hdmi port works, run my pc through it all the time.
-Hdmi cable works.
-xbox can connect to the screen in 1080 res through a vga connection.
My thoughts on the problem:
-Some sort of hdmi mismatch, my screen is rather old (doubt they wouldn't put backwards compatibility on consumer electronics though.)
-Hdmi socket on the xbox is damaged, I say this since I had a similar problem with a laptop a few days ago, turns out it was a shoddy connection (however wouldn't really explain how it works in 480p?).
maybe I am just being stupid, please any help would be greatly appreatiated.
I am dumbfounded,

Go to system settings check what the xbox is set up in?
2nd try a set of av componet cables to see if that works?
try a different HDMi cable?
just some suggestions shouldnt be that hard to find the problem... check the port of the HDMI maybe someone messed up the connection on it like they do with usbs .

in system settings it has 1080p hdmi. Av component works fine, vga works fine, I would try composite but my monitor doesn't have the connections. Tried 2 hdmi cables already, the powerwave one is good, I use it on my pc all the time. I'll have a close inspection of the hdmi port, I really don't wana rip this guy open just yet.
Here I took a photo so you can see what its doing in 1080p (stupid attachments never works).

Do those lines move around or do they stay put?
After warming up for a bit... do some of the lines appear/disappear?
-
can you change the settings to 720p? like FOOKz said about those lines , something is going on there, I would try another HDMI cable, something is interfering with it, you tried one got nothing, now you tried this one and it has those lines. usually when i get those lines the gpu is ready to take a poop.
Do you know if this slim has been opened or been worked on? just cause its a new slim they still have issues like the phat 360 ...

I think I have seen this before try googling it or look on youtube.
-
I was googling all last night, couldn't really find anything that fitted exactly what was happening here.
My thoughts are that the gpu is fine, since it works in 1080p through vga and component.
The lines move around but the spots stay relatively still. As I mentioned earlier I had a problem almost identical to this on a laptop earlier, turned out I hadn't properly seated the display connector.
I tried 720p and 1080i, just a black screen, on some of the random resolutions I can get them working with no lines, however they have a few spots in the corners. None of the resolutions above 480p work in 50hz, but 480p does??
Warranty sticker is intact.
I have another lcd upstairs (1080i) I am going to test this out on today. Please still post anything that could help.
-
man this has got me even stumped about this issue now . :dntknw: what would cause that other then maybe the monitor your using
-
tried my tv upstairs couldn't get any picture through hdmi, though I never have been able to get anything working through hdmi on that tv.
Also visually the hdmi port on this xbox looks undamaged, and F00kz the glitch is still present after the console has warmed up (played a couple levels of crysis2.)
Now I am in a bit of a pickle, I have way to tell weather its the console or the monitor.
-
take it to a gameing or electronic store and ask them to try it out on there screens or if you have a kind neighbor or friend there

ok at resolution 12XX x XXXX (cant remember), powerwave cable displays fine. However, cheap DX cable shows the red dots.
This points to it being some problem with the cables or connectors, could it be some sort of a bandwidth issue or something.
Also as the resolution is raised the problem is exacerbated. I'm thinking it could be some sort of interference.
Possibilities:
-50hz video output beating with AC, could this cause a problem?
-hdmi connects xbox floating ground with earth through the monitor, a little bit worrying.
Both cables display 1080p from my computer though.
-
This happened to my friends PS3 and it turned out that the hdmi port on the tv had corrosion so we just cleaned it and it worked.
In your case there could be corrosion on either the xbox's hdmi or on the monitor's hdmi
Again I could be wrong though

Thanks core gamer, I will take a little isopropyl carefully to the xbox socket (monitor hdmi socket is fine).
Been browsing the youtubes and googles and found 1 or two people with similar problems, most were fixed by using different hdmi cables, might pick up a better hdmi cable monday.
Thanks for all your help guys, hopefully I can get things sorted, if I do I will post it up here.
