I've seen this very often. i may just have to price some parts, if its cheap enough i maay make it
EDIT: Why a servo? i dont understand why you wouldnt just use a small dc motor?
although i am not very (at all) familiar with servos, i gather they run on DC, although in that houseing that DC may be converted to as to run it with that for for some torque reason or whatever, which is probably the whole reason, anyways i'll leave it up here anyways to see what others say about it.

Sorry, but Maplin is really bad. They overcharge (17.99 for 500g Polymorph at Maplin, 18.55 for 1kg at Rapid), don't sell stuff they really should (they sell 7segs, but not BCD to 7seg decoders, they don't sell PICAXE chips, only PICmicro), they never have worthwhile stock in their stores (at least the ones I've been too), they don't supply datasheets at all, if you ask for one on the website they tell you to contact customer care or some rubbish and their website is atrocious.
I'd suggest Rapid (http://www.rapidonline.com).

Mostly because of the gearing. Even a "slow" dc motor runs at 3000 RPM. With the gearing of the servo you are probably hanging around 3 RPM.
You can buy geared DC motors, but they are usually very bulky and more expensive than servos.
Also, one of the really neat things about servos is that the output shaft is tied to a potentiometer that turns as the shaft turns. This gives the servo the ability to know how far the output shaft has turned. And with a "factory" servo you actually don't just apply power. You tell it to turn to a certain angle using pulses similar to PWM (Pulse Width Modulation). This has the added advantage that the servo will continue to try to turn to a given angle until it either makes it to that angle or the pulses change.
(I only mention this because this is the way that I make my "Most Useless Machines". I run them with a 12F683 and only use the one switch on the top of the box.)
It lets me have options like slowing down and speeding up the arm.

Huh, kind of makes sense. And the gearing also makes the servo have a high torque as well doesn't it? for some reason i have it in my head they are high torque
So, from what i've read: i output a pulse at a certain duty cycle and i change the amplitude of the wave to change the speed?
