Intrigued by PS Vita "high-end" parts cost? Are you sure you want to know with how much of your cash is Sony filling their wallets with each unit sold?
Well, the final percentage is that the PS Vita real value is 50% of its retail price. Yeah, it hurts to know but this is only about 150-160$ for the parts it has.

A recent teardown of the machine, part by part give us the following price list:
•Touchscreen: $50
•Battery: $3.60
•Cameras: $3.50
•Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/GPS: $3.50
•NAND chip: $6.00
•SDRAM: $9.25
•BB+XCR: $16.25
•Non-electronic components: $11.00
•Other: $30.00
•Supporting materials: $10.00
But hey, this is only the "hardware" part, engineering is not included ;).

This doesn't really surprise me, they're a company making a product for consumers entertainment. Obviously they're gonna make it cheap and sell it for what people are willing to pay. They don't need to give people "good deals" lol

So do you think it would be lest costly to just buy all the parts, and assemble it myself

You're going to purchase a nand chip? Then solder it to the motherboard? Good luck with that!

And Where do you plan on purchasing all of these parts lol

they had to write a bunch of software for it, design it, prototype and build it. Plus they had to pay employees to do all that, so if they are planning on making a profit from it then yes it is going to be marked up in price from the material cost.

these things are all interesting to know but they never factor in the initial R&D and manufacturing costs as well as marketing etc. thats why consumer electronics tend to start high in price and fall as they either meet sales target or if sales of the product start to dip.

With the Xbox and PS3 it was about getting into homes not making a profit.

yer i sony and microsoft makes a loss for each console they sold. They make it back with game sales and whatnot. I think sales of wiis made a profit though

It's totally possible but.. No. Some of the equipment used to assemble it cost thousands of dollars.

maybe if you could get parts like the motherboard, daughterboard, screen, buttons, case for cheap then it might be a little bit cheaper than to buy the unit

why make it seem like he cant do it?
you dont personally know his solder skills removing and installing of smd components can be easy if you have the right tools

Anything is possible with the right tools and patients and asking for help if your not sure about how to do it or asking the right way to go about doing things.  :hifive:

Im in sales now, most of the sales I make are in the ball park of 60-200K I general make 25-30%. however any thing smaller than 10K I make 60-70%, it takes the same amount of time to package and ship a 10K part as it does a 5$ part. then my time processing the order is the same also. so markups can vary tremendously

exactly.  you gotta keep in mind that sony sets the price and everyone must sell by it so retail stores like ebgames prolly get it for $210 and sell for $249 so sony is making $50 per unit and eb is making $39 so the cost of $160 makes perfect sense to me
